I give this Cd a 5. Its somewhere in the middle at some points i think hey this could be good. then they go and ruin that with some really dumb song. i wish there lyrics were a little more mature, sometimes they try then others they lose it. Musicians ship is what really seems to hurt me

The first time I heard it I thought they were the best sounding group ever! There new one isn't as good.

Other than Relient K This is like my favorite band ever!!! The Punky style reminds me of Blink 182 more so than any other christian punk band out there! The plain fact is that HAWK NELSON ROCKS!!! I am gonna see them in concert soon, and I am expecting alot!!

I am a huge fan of Hawk Nelson, as most people who take the time to talk to me here or in real life quickly learn. This is a great CD and one of only a few in my collection that I listen to regularly. Unfortunetely, I am not going to get to see Hawk Nelson in concert Friday, even though my local radio station was giving away tickets and backstage passes (they're playing after a hockey game. :stare: ). But, this is a great CD and I'm looking forward to more HN in the future.
Best songs on the CD are "Letters To The President", "Things We Go Through" and... what was that other cool song??... oh yeah,
"EVERY LITTLE THING"!! (my favorite song right now)

Please ignore this post, I used to be an idiot. :)

I don't buy Christian music just because a Christian artist made it. I heard "Every Little Thing" one day on XM Radio, and went to Stage Right, listened to the first five songs and bought it. I can't say this about any band other than Five Iron, but there is not one song on the CD I don't like. Every song is well done. "Letters to the President" is one of the boldest, most well put together pop punk songs I've ever listened to. They have a great, clean sound and they don't overdo it on the harmonies, but they're all well-timed. This is the kind of CD you can put in your player and not take out for months. They will be big. They know how to treat fans and they are energetic and fun in concert. I recommend that everyone rush out and buy their CD and all their T-shirts and stuff. If you like Relient K, Hawk is better. If you like FM Static, Hawk is better. They are the next big thing.

They are definitely musically talented. The only downside is 80% of their lyrics are about girls and relationships.

Posted on 02-21-2005 by 12StonesDude
Every once in a while a band comes out that not only makes meaningful songs, but also loves to have fun, this is definitely the case with Hawk Nelson. Yes some songs are about girls, but they are written in a positive and lifting way. Letters To The President is an amazing song that makes you think about all the crap in this world, and California makes you just want to surf! lol. All in all this an awesome release, and I love it. I give it a 9. Minus one point becuz Trevor from TFK is EVERYWHERE ;)

Hawk Nelson has a new cd coming out in April. It's called "Smile...It's the End of the World" I can't wait!!!!

Posted on 03-03-2007 by conceived in fire
Quite possible one of the worst bands I've ever heard. Horrible nasal vocals, drop-d power chords, and often laughable lyrics. The chorus of "Things We Go Through" makes me wanna laugh and puke at the same time. It's sad how many kids eat up this stuff.

I actually like this cd quite a bit. Much better than "Smile..". I gave it an 8.

Before the release of Smile, It's The End of the World I would have said HN was my favorite band.

They don't have the best guitarist - at all, and the lyrics are awful, but the vocals are honestly great (on this Album). He's Canadian so he has a bit of an accent.

I can say that this CD is well written. Not the lyrics, but the music, Its not complex or layered or sophisticated, but thats what one would expect from a band like this.

I would never stand up for Hawk Nelson. I don't like them. But I would never say this album is a bad album. I don't care for this type of music and this album sits in my top 10.

I don't know what it is about the band, but I liked how they were authentic. They weren't matured so that they would sell. They were real. And for a while, they were undiscovered.

It doesn't sound like he has an accent, and just because he's Canadian doesn't mean he does. Also, you don't like them now because people have heard of them? And you only liked them because they were undiscovered at one point?

He has a bit of an accent. You can hear it more when he's talking.
Im kind of anti-conformist. Internally I can't like something that lots of people my age think is fantastic. I used to like RK back in their Self titled and "Anatomy of the Tongue in Cheek" days. I heard them at the bumper-cars at Disneyland. I don't like them anymore.

Its not that Switchfoot sucks that I don't like them. They do. But its more that everyone else wears switchfoot shirts to school.

I don't intentionally do it, I just can't like the most popular bands. Thats maybe why I hate rap. (No Rap really sucks) But I just cant like a band if everyone else in my school does.

Man, that's really lame IMO, but if that's how you feel then it's cool.

And I guess I don't hear Jason's 'accent' because I'm Canadian as well.

I can definitely connect with that at least. (And there's plenty of unpopular rap, and some well-known artists who are good *cough* Fort Minor *cough*)

However I don't see how his voice can be "great" at all

It's actually not as bad as you're making it out to be... I mean, at least this one isn't as bad as their new one... I mean, I don't go much for pop-punk, but HN isn't the worst band by far, that would be Stellar Kart or Avril Lavine.
You really need to listen to Handbook for the Sellout by Five Iron Frenzy
Why is that?

Does it have to do with the canadian accent?

Or something about anti-conformity?

Or is it about how much Switchfoot and rap suck?

Or does it have to do with Disneyland or bumpercars?

Maybe its just a good song...?

Posted on 03-11-2007 by Skeeter
Several reasons:

A: It's an awesome song.

B: It applies directly to what you just posted.

C: Reese Roper is a really cool name.

Secret option D: Bill told you to.

Agreed. Listen to them, then Relient K or Blink 182. Their style is a complete copy of other bands. When you're an original band, the objective is to write original music with a new style, and to change the music scene.

They really don't sound like RK or B182. Mabye a bit like old RK, but not Blink 182. Blink and new RK is crap, HN, I think sounds alot better...

But they are the same genre, so they cant sound too different...

OK, then compare them to Good Charlotte and New Found Glory. There's not much of a difference.

Simply put, Hawk Nelson isn't an original band. True, I do listen to a few, a FEW, of their songs on occasion, but they are not anything new.

Hey! Quit dogging on Hawk! What do you expect from a new band?
I bought Letters to the President and loved it + they have a new one coming out April 4th and I'll probably buy it too. True, they are the whole pop rock but in my opinion they are better than most and they can probably rock better than any of you too so give em a break.

Peace~

Yah, but it all depends what kind of music you like I guess. I like the guys and I think they had a killer start. With Trev Mcnevan coaching his younger brother I think they can really blaze a new trail for pop rock.

Are you serious? "What do you expect from a new band"? So, because it's their debut album, it's ok if it sucks? And it's ok if it's just a copy of what everyone else does?

Hey this cd was great I bought it last summer and I'm looking forward to their next one. I agree with taco bell guy, I don't know why everyone always slams Hawk jus cuz they sound like some of the other secular bands. I think they are pretty cool!

Posted on 04-01-2006 by musicchick
I'm shocked at all of the Hawk bashers out there. I adore this CD. I completely disagree with those who say that they are unorigional and melody free. I have played the piano since I was 8 years old and have played the bass since I was 15. I've seen Hawk in concert twice and they were awesome. It is so hard to find good Christian punk rock. I don't listen to secular music. So i am very thankful that Hawk is out there doing the kind of music that I like. Buy this CD. Don't listen to those guys that are anti-Hawk. It's the best. That's why I ranked it a 10. Rock on Hawk Nelson!!!!

Can't wait for "Smile....It's the End of the World"

Their T-shirts are cool too. HAWK NELSON IS MY FRIEND.

It is a matter of taste. Their music is catchy easy listening punk. some people will like it others will not. Only so many people can be original. If everyone released totally original cd's it would cease to be original as they would all be doing the same thing. There is a place for the normal fun stuff to listen to and a place for the incredible. Just because this band is not original does not make it worthless.

I agree and I disagree. Yes, I agree with your point that it isn't original, but easy-going pop/punk, but I disagree because if everybody did something original, no one would sound alike because everyone would sound different than everyone else.

Anyways, why don't we stop all the debating and get back to reviewing the CD.
Only so many people can be original. If everyone released totally original cd's it would cease to be original as they would all be doing the same thing.
That is a really, really self-contradictory statement. Sure, they would all be making original music, so they're technically doing the same thing, but it all sounds different, so it's still original.
There is a place for the normal fun stuff to listen to and a place for the incredible. Just because this band is not original does not make it worthless.
Sure, I don't have a problem with fun, generic music from time to time. I don't have much respect for the people that make that kind of music though, because it takes a very marginal amount of talent. I'm not bashing Hawk Nelson, just generic music in general.

I see it as like The Incredibles small little lesson. you know if everybody is super then nobody is. If everybody was original there would be no bands that stand above the rest.

i gave this cd a 4 because most of the songs don't really have a point, all that they talk a bout (with a few exceptions) is how they cry. it also sounds like someone else writes their songs. but ther are a few good songs such as leters, every little thing and califonia

Just because (in theory) every band is original doesn't mean it woudln't be unique. There would just be much, much more origianl music instead of just a little bit.

I give it a 7. From Underneath is really cheesy. The first three songs are good, skip over four, listen to five and six, seven is worthless so skip, I expected Take Me to be much better because I had friends that think it's amazing, and I don't like it. Someone Else Before is just dumb. The rest of the CD is good. Letters to the President (song) is amazing! I listened to that song 20 times in one day one time, and I'm still not tired of it (talking to you "Hello")! I'd almost buy this CD just for California, Things, Every Little Thing, Letters, and Long and Lonely Road, though.

I would have to give a an 8 because Punk isn't my fav, but for a first cd and punk I would give it a 9. Every Little Thing, California, Things we go through, and Letters to the President are pretty sweet!

I didn't like it all that much. It was goo, especially for a first CD, but there was very little creative music. There were no solos, difficult intros, etc. I tabbed out EVERY LITTLE THING the first time I tried. They just repeat the chords over and over. But then again I don't really like punk and I am into classic rock, (black sabbath, Hendrix, Clapton).

Posted on 06-17-2005 by aero!
There songs have a very interesting punk melody and I really like the music in their songs. But some of the songs don't make sense.

"You know I’ve heard it all before
Now my eyes they run like faucets
Until my tears are dry

She said we were in love
I take a sip of my water
I guess we’ll carry on at last
She still thinks it’s my fault
And I’m nobody at all
She must have thought it was someone else before"

er...yeah. And the talking at the end? omg.

What are you talking about? They had solos on there. There are solos on "California", "Every Little Thing", and even one on "Recess".

Hawk Nelson-needs some growing, sorta like my attitude.

now now, no vulgar name calling ;) you and aero have your own opinions. calling someone names isn't going to make them think any better of the band.

i dunno- it was a well written cd, but i'm not really into indie-punk. i gave it an 8 anyway, because they have a couple of songs i really like. if you love relient k :swoon: this cd's probly for you

I give this CD a 9. I dont' really get why everyone bashes Hawk Nelson. You can tell right away that Jason sings with alot of heart and passion. The melodies and harmonies blend well I think. Every single song on this cd is well crafted and written. There's not a single song they "sluffed" on. I'll be looking forward to checking them out in concert this July.

i love letters to the president...but when i was about to go see them in concert something came up (it was at YC 2005) and i got there just as they played the last chord on their last song :whine: but they are awesome... sometimes they are a little soft for me......But when Im in the mood I listen to them a lot  i give them a 10!

This CD is very much not indie punk. But yeah, if you like Relient K, you'll probably like these guys.

Awful. Putrid. Abominable. Disgusting. Unpleasant. Deplorable. Atrocious. Appalling. Dreadful. Abhorrent. Contemptible. Execrable. Foul. Repugnant. Reprehensible. Nauseating. Disheartening. Beastly. Loathsome. Substandard. Deficient. Calamitous. Intolerable. Rotten. Regrettable. Unbearable. Pitiable. Malodorous. Scandalous. Offensive. Ignominious. Despicable. Detestable.

Dissatisfactory.

Why does everyone bash Hawk Nelson? Because they really need to get a crucial part to good music: A sound of their own. Seriously, these Blink-182/Good Charlotte clones are getting old.

Their lyrics are atrocious, ask aero! pointed out. They have no meaning. Just words thrown together.

Melodies? It's just two notes over and over... You want good melodies? Listen to Jimmy Eat World, anything John Lennon or Paul McCartney has written, Nirvana, old Foo Fighters, Keane, and the Postal Service.

Basically, I agree with Skeeter. Completely. :D

this is an awesome cd. i prefer "smile it's the end of the world" but only because i like harder rock. the only disappointment i have with this cd is the bass part on some of the songs. if you listen to the bass part on "the one thing i have left" you will agree that HN could have done better. when i learned how to play the bass line for "california" i got bored with it after a week.

Hawk Nelson ROCKS plain and simple.

I gave it a ten simply because it's awesome

I listened to it so much i hardly listen to it anymore but it was a really good cd. best songs Every little thing, Letters to the president, things we go through, california, someone else before... yes i realise i posted like half the cd. but meh..

I agreed, but frankly I didnt care at all for Smile its the end of the World. Letters to the President was many times better.

They seemed to mature in such a way so that teenagers would like them more.

Im glad they put out SitEotW. Though I would never listen to it, its a good concert CD.

Hopefully the thrid album will be more like the first!

Right on! The only other one I'd add is Things We Go Through, but it's kinda short.

I saw these guys at creation Fest '05... they are gonna be the next big thing

Hawk Nelson has some of the most practical songs ever.
Buy this cd if you like punkish rockish junk.

This cd is alright, and I sorta like it even though punk isn't my thing. 8.

Posted on 10-02-2005 by canguru2
I like this cd a lot. :yep: I listened to 36 Days for 2 hours straight on one roadtrip, so I'm a little tired of it... but it's a really good cd. I love punk.

Posted on 10-07-2005 by RubberDucky4JC
my favorite song on this cd is "Right Here"

sweet! where do you live?

Listened to this again, and reaffirmed my opinion. The music is mediocre at best, the vocals are tolerable and typical for the genre and the lyrics are quite often horrible.
Two of the 3 solos are simply the vocal parts equivalent on guitar, and the third would best be described by a vulgar Australian slang word.

Posted on 11-02-2007 by nbfan
Sucky. Mediocre. Immature. Yeah. I don't hate it, some of the songs are kinda catchy. But it's not very good. 4.

Personally, I thought that this CD was pretty cool!
