............................

I give this album a 4. It was so repetive and the drumming wasn't even that great. The china symbol was used in every breakdown giving every breakdown the same feel. The vox are better, but I just don't like them as much... Thirll Seeker is much better in my opinion.

I gurantee you that if you listen to it 5 more times you'll change your mind about the drumming. ;) It's just more subtle this time.

He did use the china too much, though. But I think the absurdly loud rhythem guitar was largely responsible for the breakdown problem.

On its own, any song on the cd is amazing, but string them together....and they may as well be a 48 minute long encore.

Judging by my everything, Im sure you can all tell that ABR is my favorite band. The guitar work on this CD is absolutely crazy. It doesnt have that "shredtacular" feeling, but they are really technical, they are both among the best in metal. Period. Also the drumming is quite unreal.

With that said, Thrill Seeker is the CD that's more memorable and contains more emotion. The slowdown in Too Late For Roses is beautiful. That's where Messengers is lacking. The breakdowns are not revolutionary by any means, but still enjoyable. They used too much palm muting, thats a definite.

But something that nobody has pointed out yet is the lyrics. On this CD the lyrics are an amazing collaborative effort by all the members. "Wave goodbye to the past, you have got your whole life to lead". Thrill Seeker lyrics...not very good. "You're a little girl with a stupid crush". Almost humorous.

And what ill leave my review with is this, i have listened to this CD through about 50 times. Pathetic, I know. But oh well. It isn't nearly as repetitive as it seemed initially.

I don't think the lyrics for TS are poor at all, I actually like them better.
And I like your point about TS being more memorable, and that the breakdowns are better and more original. I think that is a point I was trying to say.

Well, the line is actually "You're like a little girl". But that was a pretty bad one to pick. I really liked the TS lyrics....and The Seventh Trumpet is like, straight out of the bible. Good ole' apocalyptic song. Lyrics aren't from Revelation, though. It may have been Job...but don't quote me on it. Not sure why that'd be in Job, but I think that's where I saw it.

You are most likely right, but the lyrics in Messengers are collaborative and it's pretty awesome. Redemption lyrics are powerful too. 7th trumpet lyrics are amazing i wont deny that, but i just prefer Messengers. Yeah....

4/10. So repetitive! I need some good clean vocals in my metal, and some good variety. In stead of the breakdowns coming naturally, it sounds like they made it a goal to put in as many repetitive breakdowns in the music as possible. It's probably just not my style, but I'm extremely picky about albums not being repetitive, and this is all the same.

I can't give this one a 10, but I maintain that this is the best Christian metalcore band in existence.

The drummer is absurdly good- the whole thing is ridiculously intense, and the new singer is positively excellent. If you like As I lay Dying, Destroy the Runner, and all those bands...you have to listen to August Burns Red.

I gave it a 9. The drummer is wickedly awesome, and the music is very well done. It can get a little repetitive though. But overall, a great album.

Pretty good, the drums are indeed awesome, but too much of the breakdowns should be more inventive - instead of just heavy palm muting.

The vocals have improved in my opinion, with just enough chants and spoken parts to satisfy the fan of melodic metal that I am.

Posted on 08-12-2007 by Mr. claw
Thrill Seeker is the better album. Jake Luhrs is better than the old vocalist, but it just wasn't quite the same. The breakdowns were so repetitve...I felt like they were just trying to assault my ears instead of create a compelling metal experience.

And I still loved it. Because ABR has mad skills. Every metalcore fan should get this cd and Thrill Seeker if they don't already have it...August Burns Red sets the bar high.

My favorite part of this disc is when it gets real deep in the third song (near the end, whatever that song is called). It kinda makes me excited. These guys are great. I don't think its as repetitive as you guys are saying, but I guess they could do a bit more. Its pretty intense the whole way through which is a definite plus. A 8.

 Me too.

"I hope, you survive...survive the crash..."

*mosh*

I like it, I give it a 9. But I do think I like thrill seeker better.

Posted on 09-23-2007 by Mr. claw
Having listened to this cd a million times, it really isn't as repetitive as it may have seemed at first. There's a decent amount of standout songs and the ones that aren't a work of creative genius are still amazing all their own.

Again I say, go get it. They're the best.

The poll screwed up on this one too.

Posted on 09-24-2007 by Mr. claw
Still a 9 from me.

I didnt find this Cd as catchy and all as Thrill Seeker, and the drumming isnt as impressive as Thrill Seeker, but overall I think this Cd is more metal with the better vocalist and all. I saw them last year not long after they got Jake and it was one of the most intense shows id ever seen.

But yeah, its a bit repettitive too, but still really awesome

The drumming is less impressive because the music is less chaotic.

That said, the drums to "Vital Signs" are ridiculously hard.

no way man this is way better then thrill seeker its got a completely new feel to it. the new vox are sweet the guitar riffs are way more intense not as good drumming but new screamer just did it for me

Posted on 10-28-2007 by earlessdog
maybe 9

I was really worried about a new vocalist, but he is respectable, a really good vocalist. Though I still like the last one considerably more, but the new guy does no damage to Messengers.

Drum work is top notch, guitars are top notch, bass is good, vox are good, rythm guitar sucks.

Yes, you heard me, the rythm sucks. Everything else on this album kicks butt, but give me a break!

My first thought after i listened to the full album: "That was one long song"
The reason why this album has any repetativeness in it, is the rythm guitar. its the same thing throughout the entire album, palm mute, palm mute, palm mute, palm mute, palm mute, palm mute, palm mute. Nearly the same style in every song as well.

Come on, can't you play a riff now and then? I can not listen to the whole album anymore, i am driven crazy about half way through, because of the excessive palm muting.

But, other than that, this album is unbelievable, easily one of the greatest i've heard.

But, I still prefer Thrill Seeker, because that has more stand out songs, more memorable songs, more individual.

But, Messengers is a fantastic fallow up, besides the annoying constant palm muting.

these guys are amazing regardless.

Posted on 10-28-2007 by Mr. claw
I have to agree, really. Thrill Seeker's vocalist said things in a more chaotic manner.

And he could go looooowwwww better than Jake. Ask the breakdown in Suburbia.

That said, according to my mp3 player, the 3 most listened to songs on the device are..."Eleventh Hour, Back Burner, Vital Signs".

I think Black Sheep, and Redemption are my most favorite from it so far.
And my itunes says Liar (Taking Back Sunday), Broadcasting..(Comeback Kid) and Wake The Dead (Comeback Kid) are my most played.

Posted on 10-29-2007 by normajean777
I still have them playing live in my mind. Its so cool. These guys are amazingly talented and I keep listening to Messengers.

Posted on 10-29-2007 by Rock 'n Christ
this band is pretty cool, possibly my favorite metalcore band. ive got both CD's on my iPod, and i definetly like the new vocalist better. the drums are a little less chaotic, but i think that they are musically a little more "mature"( dont know how else to put it). i love "Truth of a Liar" "The Blinding Light" and "Redemption". great band and CD

Posted on 10-30-2007 by conceived in fire
In reality this band is mediocre metalcore, but according to various things I read nearly every metalcore band I've heard of is mediocre.

Anyways, this is one of three metalcore bands with no singing I really enjoy.

I guess my favorites are "Truth of a Liar", "The Blinding Light", "Composure" and "The Eleventh Hour".

Posted on 10-30-2007 by emery
yeah man composures one of the best songs on the album

Who are the other two? Cause we all know there are only like 2 or 3 Christians bands without singing.

What exactly do you mean?

Posted on 11-02-2007 by conceived in fire
Well according to what you read, artists at the top of the metalcore genre (KSE, All That Remains, Unearth) are mediocre like all the others.
But it seems like people will and in all honesty could say that about every band in the genre.
Who are the other two? Cause we all know there are only like 2 or 3 Christians bands without singing.
Living Sacrifice and Unearth (the latter not being Christian).
