Delerious?-Now is the time [CD/DVD]
Posted on 10-31-2006 by Rich*This contains (as the description suggests) a CD and a DVD of a recent Delirious concert at Willow Creek church, Chicago. It comes in a very nice cardboard packaging, Delirious? never seem to do anything normally! I'll rate each disk in turn I think.
Disk 1: the DVD
The main part of the DVD is the 15 track live concert. This really does capture a cracking show and is beautifully shot. Some of the highlights are:
Solid Rock - This is a good song on the album but live it is amazing! Martin singing the 'rap' through a megaphone actually sounds great, a solid performance.
Our God reigns - This is one of Delirious' best songs ever in my opinion and it is stunning on the DVD. Even after well over a decade and many many styles they still have an amazingly clear passion for worshipping God. great stuff.
Every little thing/take off my shoes/majesty - This more intimate section of the concert contains more than it's fair share of 'spine-tingling' moments.
Investigate - Probably Delirious' best live song and ths version doesn't disappoint, makes you realise how amazing Stu G is!
The DVD contains 3 bonus features:
The Delirious? story:
This is a 30 minute documentary where the boys tell the story of the Delirious journey. This is very interesting and although I kind of knew the story it was good to hear their perspectives on various bits. and it contains some entertaining early pictures, partcularly of Mr Stew Smith's hair! One thing I really appreciated about the documentary was how well edited it was. for example at one point it kept cutting to Stew playing on an electric kit and he was actually playing exactly along to the background music. This sort of thing was the case throughout, the music fitted perfectly to the video, even when there were shots of the crowd singing they were singing the same songs as were being played! very very good (particularly if you're a geek like me who picks up on that sort of thing).
Behind the scenes at Willow Creek:
This is a background look at setting up the concert, it is quite interesting but not amazing.
This is great, it basically shows the monitor wall that the video editors have and you hear them directing the video for one of the songs. it is fascinating to see how intense it is, you don't really appreciate that when you just watch the DVD.
Overall I think I would give the DVD 9/10, my only gripe with it is that 11/15 tracks are from their 2 most recent albums, that is not necessarily bad as they were great albums but it would still have been nice to see some more of the older songs from Glo/King of fools. a bit nitpicky really!
Disk 2: The CD
The CD has a similar although slightly different tracklisting to the DVD. The mix is very nice, there's a good balance between the band and the audience (12 audience mics I think it said in the documentary!). You get a real sense of the progression of the concert on this CD which is something that was missing a bit from the Access:D album. This is definately one that I'll keep coming back to.
I think I'll give the CD 8/10 for similar reasons to the DVD, 13/15 tracks are from their last 2 albums (3 of which are 'our God reigns!). The radio edit of 'our God reigns' seems like a slightly odd choice to end the disk with, they should have put 'History maker' or something on instead in my opinion.
All in all this is an excellent package for both D:fans and newcomers to the band. It is an extremely high quality package and well worth getting.
Overall it gets 9/10 for being one of the best releases this year.
