Maybe, Norma Jean is sorta more all of the place. More Mathcore.
Norma Jean isnt close to being mathcore.

I was thinking that UO would kind of go in the direction they did after hearing "I have 10 friends and a crowbar...". I really think that song should have gone on DTGL. Overall it was a step up from TOCS but alot of the songs were similar to each other (in fact i heard the same riff on two songs ) but overall good listen. Reminded of ETID a little bit.

I have been a long time fan of Underoath and I'd have to say this is one of there better albums. I like the direction this one went in compared to ToCS and how it was more of a unified album than a few songs on one disc. All of Underoath's albums are great in my opinion though.

yeah, i saw these guys play this album live, amazing.
I love this cd a lot, i thought i posted in this thread a long time ago, i've had this cd since it first came out.

I can't normally listen to an entire album from this general genre group without coming down with a headache, and while that remains true, I find myself listening to my brother's copy of DTGL a lot. There's something entirely magnetic about it.

I like how they balance the savagery of Spencer's vocals with interludes of truly beautiful music. It seems like they've got an exemplary grasp on a 'beauty and the beast' mentality.

This has got to be Underoath's most powerful cd. I've had it for a few months and still love it. The screaming has gotten better and they really make use of sung vocals well.

WHO GAVE THIS CD A 2 AND WHERE THE HECK DOES HE LIVE!!!!????
Sorry for the caps, but wow. That's dangerous. I mean like, really, dangerous.

I'm not an over the top screemo fan, but, I liked this CD. It had good sound, the instumental parts were good too. Over all, great CD.

sweet, but this album is hardcore, not really screamo.
sorry, i don't know why i felt the need to correct that

K I've said this more than once on this site...Underoath IS the best band I know of. Like Adam K said, "Define the Great line" is their most mature work yet.... Timothy McTague is my favorate guitar player in the world. And Yeah, this cd is really really powerful but it's also beautiful to my ears! I could fall asleep to this cd not becuz its borrying(oh no no no....definalty NOT) but its a lulabye.......................

And the other guitar player(James something or other) doesn't look like somebody from underoath....really, he looks like he's from a......i don't know, he's not hardcore.

But a full out 10 from ME Justin.... :swoon: Underoath Kicks!!!

Tim is cool, but he doesn't do anything amazing with the guitar.
and James is awesome, why don't you think hes hardcore?

I thought Tim was great in concert. I've never seen anyone spin the guitar that much and that insanely fast while keeping the rhythm.

yeah, hes nuts, but i mean playing guitar. Regards To Myself is the most technical on guitar, i think. (that hes done)

Everyone Looks So Good From Here is also pretty technical.

Posted on 02-28-2007 by tl_guitarnut
Yeah I like Tim, he's really good. And I also like the technical aspect of this album, their old album looks tiny compared to this one.

i really like the old one too, but yeah, that was generic. This is a lot more original, and i was being pretty hard there, this is a more technical album, and Tim is really good.

Posted on 02-28-2007 by |)rink)v(tn|)ew
no no....i hear ya... yeah, (on the contrary) Tim is the MOST technical guitar player i know...the riffs that he plays in this album are crazy, I mean....clever. James is more just backround guitar....Im not saying he sucks...lol, he awesome, just not as good as Tim and about the fact that he isn't hard core, well if you've seen he in the video that came with the cd youd know what i mean. He's just kinna weird....???

although i am a crazy underoath fan............i have never seen them in concert....:nope: :whine: ....but i've got the money when ever they come around here!!!:shifty:

Ok man, no offense, but you must know next to none guitarists then. Tim is by no means the most technical player, not being cocky, he just isn't. And i know you said that YOU know of, so i'm not attacking you.
I could give you a list of a LOT more technical guitar players or all sorts of music.

And what do you mean James is weird? They're all weird, all weird and funny. I have watched the dvd, i loved it, those guys are so awesome and funny. But judging by that video, the "weirdest" or, as i would like to say, 'funniest' is Tim.

You're right, earless. Can I call you earless? Is there a widely accepted abbreviation? Just wonderin'. Tim is good, but I've heard crazier, and yeah, he's totally nuts (which is completely cool with me).

Posted on 03-01-2007 by ice_wiz
Tim wasn't meant to be nuts. His guitar playing on Define the Great Line was supposed to be quick and heavy.

Has anyone noticed him using these chords over and over on the CD?

Haha, no, no, no, man, I was talking about his behavior in general :) . His guitar was perfect, as far as I'm concerned. Not that I understand any of that stuff.....I'm a drummer. I know that's not neccessarily the best excuse, but I don't understand an ounce of it.

Yeah, I noticed those. Norma Jean has been using those for much longer. Tim is seriously though one of the craziest live guitarists I've ever seen.

oh no dawg, none taken.

I guess the closest guitar player that comes close is....Ben from skillet. he is also very good with solos. then i like abunch of others LIKE norma jean's guitars and Demon hunter's and OH!!.... Becoming the archetype....

but for me My FAV is Tim....just my personal opinion...lol

and when i say weird...uh well.....i quote, kinna, "when this album goes quad. platium, i'll have my own dressing private dressing room...decked out to a 'theme' which will be different everyday....one day will be 'toy birthday party day'...everyday ten people dressed up as clowns will come in and sing me happy b-day beofre i go out and play...."....!!!!???

That was hilarious. Beyond reason. I know it's obvious, but come on, they sing him happy B-day everyday...and it's only his b-day once a year. There's nothing better than going through the drive thru at some restaurant and responding to their usual, "Have a nice day", with "happy birthday!". Try it. I bet you absolutely nothing they'll laugh.

"You said , 'Erector set'." "Dude! Erector sets are bad as crap!"

James is cool.

He was just joking around man, he was totally making it up as he went along. If you think that is weird, you would be pretty shocked if you ever met me.

and i don't really get how you said Tim was the most technical guitarist you know of, and yet you know of the guys from Becoming The Archetype, those guys, at the moment, are by far some of the most technical guitarist in the Christian music industry. They, in technicality terms, wipe Tim out completely.
But everyone is there own.

lol....i guess your right, i just like him ok?....lol....yeah i also agree with you about becoming the archetype too... they have awesome riffs....

anyways, the showdown has some pretty good guitarists too.

The thing i love about Tim's style on this cd is when he does like the
---0 or the----0 or I LOVE the riff in the second breakdown in Returning
---4 ----6 empty handed!.....just awesome

and yeah....we all have different styles and heroes...Tim is mine,

Frik! I want to see them SO bad!

Oh and don't get me wrong!....It's not like i dont have a sence of humor....lol

Posted on 03-01-2007 by tl_guitarnut
Tim is my favorite too man, even though there are more "technical" guitarists out there, he is just really cool.

A 7 for me. This album got way too much hype for the overall quality. It's pretty unstructured/random, and these chords:

It's your opinion and everything, but the fact that it was less structured and more random and crazy was what wet it apart from the generic screamo that "Chasing Safety" was.

So where does the music begin on this CD? Mine must have gliched, because all I have is 11 filler tracks of noise

That would be me. I gave it that for the only one song on the CD that was remotely decent. In all honesty, if they kicked Spencer, put Aaron up front, and got another drummer, I would like them so much better...

:nope:

Seriously, this is a screamo band. You can't turn it into all emo, and kick Spencer. Aaron is better as backing anyway, imo. And the drums....What the hell?! The drums are incredible! I don't know how you can not call that talent.

Posted on 08-01-2007 by Mr. claw
 All of Underoath's fans (with the exception of AX, here) would totally spaz out if they kicked Spencer and made Aaron the frontman.

Spencer is a perfectly good vocalist.

Posted on 08-02-2007 by +SEAL+
Agreed. Having Spencer up front is what makes it Underĝath. (Ah, I love the accent-mark plugin for Firefox!!)

Okay, now that I've heard Define the Great Line, it's time for me to weigh in...AWESOME!!

Okay, this is my first Underĝath CD, and so I was expecting quite a bit...well, it fulfilled. I think the big part I like about it is that they scream, but it's not about the screams. It's also about the instrumental arrangements (like Salmarnir, which was an awesome song, BTW) and the contrast between Aaron's vocals and Spencer's screaming.

The really cool thing about it was that it told a story of sorts. If you read through the CD booklet, looking at the pictures and looking at the lyrics, it almost starts to fall into a pattern, with Salmarnir as the turning point of all the action. The first four songs are full of despair and wallowing in darkness. Then comes Salmarnir, which is from the Icelandic Bible, a Psalm about God calling all his people. Then after that, you've got songs about a soul making its way towards God, until you get to "Behind the mask you'll find yourself alone/it's not the end of the road for you."

(Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but that's what I got out of it)

Not incredible enough to merit a 10 (which I will probably never give to any album), but definitely a 9.

Posted on 08-22-2006 by akaukal
This is one amazing album by an amazing band. Next to Cries of the Past, this is hands down the best album!

I think this is the best thing they've done with either lineup.

Posted on 11-07-2006 by the crossing
changing of times was good! but it wasnt the greatest. to be honest i felt it had no feel. chassing saftey was great but it was still missing something.
Define the great line is soo different its almost old and new underoath. its got a diferent texture a more epic feel to it. its not an album you could like straight off the bat with insainly catchy songs. but its got this big feel to it that i cant explain. In regards to myself is a flippin awesome song the intro is just so in your face!
I have never heard an album like it! i love salaminr as well its so cool psalm 50 in icelandic!
and the intro to every one looks so good from up here is just phenominal in its own right! aaron gillespie is the man on drums!
i cant really have a fave song because they are all good!

I agree, although I haven't heard a few songs off of AoD or CotP.

Underoaths most mature work I'd say. I love "In Regards To Self" and "Returning Empty Handed".

Posted on 11-23-2006 by underoath24
Ok. This is an AMAZING CD. dont get me wrong. But, it seemed almost like having aaron do less vocals and having all the instrumentals was just a cop out. But, lyriclly, it was better. And the deeper screaming was also a nice touch. I also (though i dont know why) feel that ALL the songs run together and sounded the same (although i love them all) SO! my final suggestion is BUY THIS CD! and get theyre only chasing safety, which was about the same (maybe a tab better

Dude. i dont know. Maybe, Norma Jean is sorta more all of the place. More Mathcore. But yeah, I guess a little.

To whom is may concern didnt quite meet the standards of their other hymn (kinda) some will seek forgiveness, others escape, but it was still a good song. once you got past the 20 minute instrumental intro.

Posted on 12-01-2006 by heisouronlyhope
UnderOath is amazing the first song I heard by them was "Reinventing Your Exit" and that was acouple of years ago and I never really checked them out until I heard "Writting on the walls" and just yeah I never like screamo until I heard Spencers scream and now I'm into Scream, hardcore bands, "Regards To Myself" blew me away the vocals and guitar just I learned how to play it but it took me 3 months to figur it out, I give it a 10!
