Don't strum alone... |
(By Aaron)
I've
tried to put up all these tabs in order from easiest to hardest. With
practice
you
should be able to play all these beats without fumbling around. Remember
that
these
beats are just a few examples and as you get better you should be able
to add to
them.
Try to find your own style and look for things YOU think sound good.
MP3 clip of how that drum beat should sound.

4/4. This is pretty much the easiest beat to play. This is called "four four time." when
written out it looks like "4/4 time." This beat is the ROOT of almost every song. Other
drummers just add their own style to it by either adding a fancy bass beat or something
like that. Play slow to begin and as you feel more confident, play faster.

16ths. This is the same as the 4/4 beat but with twice as many hit's on the high-hat.
This beat can sound pretty cool once you get it down. If you hear a song where the 4/4
beat just sounds too slow, play this and it will fit better. Play slow at first, and then speed up.

3/4. This is a new beat unlike the 4/4 beat because it has 3 counts instead of 4 some songs
are written that require a 3/4 beat. Like: (This is your time, MWS)(Two sets of Jones',
Big Tent Revival)(Table for Two, Ceadmons Call) I can't think of many others but there
are a few out there. Play slow at first, and then speed up.

Jazz. This is similar to the 4/4 beat in that the bass and snare are the same.
You can call it Jazz or Swing and people should know what you're talking about.
Make sure you have complete control of the ride (or high-hat) in this beat.
If you play with the High-Hat, lift your foot up on the 1,3,4 and 6 High-Hat beats.
(I'll mark first few with a "*") Get a W's CD or something similar and a lot of the
beats are Jazz. Play slow at first, and then speed up.

Well,
that's it. If there is another beat I have missed that maybe you heard
about
from
somewhere, email me @ aaronleb@mail.com
and I'll email it too you. I'll be
making
a "Fill" section soon so stay tuned. If you want to e-mail me about
it,
that
would be fine, just so I know someone out there will use it. =) Have
fun and God Bless.
