| The Official LotR Trivia Game OK folks, Let's have another go at LOTR Trivia!
In the interests of generating more interest in LOTR trivia, I've decided to make two threads--one for easy to intermediate, and the other intermediate to advanced, based on the fact that the advanced trivia threads seem to attract only around five consistant players. My thinking was that by having a thread for easy and intermediate trivia, we could provide a fun forum for those interested in participating who perhaps haven't read the Silmarillion, know elvish, or in general aren't as geeky as some of us happen to be. This is a test..after a few weeks if this thread isn't generating any interest because everyone's posting in the other thread, I will discontinue this thread and have tha advanced thread become the general LOTR trivia thread. So post, post post!
RULES:
1) Material that can be covered:
The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, Material from all three films.
2) After a question has been asked, there will be a three day period for people to answer. If no one has answered within three days of the question being asked, someone can ask a new question.
3) If someone answers a question correctly, he/she will have 24 hours in which to post a new question. If no new question is asked, then anyone can ask a question.
4) If a question is asked where the movie and the book differ on the answer, unless the question asker specifies which answer he/she wants, the books shall be considered authoritative. (example: When did the ents decide to go to war? Movie answer: after seeing the destruction of their lands in the south. Book answer: After the Entmoot)
I think that about covers it. I'll start us off:
What superstition led the dwarves to seek out another member for their quest to the Lonely Mountain?

| Return of the LOTR trivia: Intermediate and Advanced Time for another round of LOTR trivia!
This here is the advanced trivia thread. I have decided to test a theory of mine, and that is that a lot of people don't participate in trivia due to the fact that it becomes too hard too fast. So the thread "LOTR Trivia: Beginning and intermediate" is designed to give people who haven't read as much LOTR literature a chance to play. However, if in the end it turns out that there was no need for it, it'll be deleted and this will become the main LOTR trivia thread.
So without further ado, the intermediate and advanced LOTR trivia thread!!
Rules:
1) Material to be covered:
The Hobbit, LOTR, The Silmarillion, Lost Tales 1 and 2, Unfinished Tales, the elvish language, Tolkien's life, and all three films. The History of Middle Earth, the Adventures of Tom Bombadil, and other such books are not included due to the fact that not enough people have read them.
5) Similarily, when there is a discrepancy between The Silmarillion and Lost Tales/Unfinished Tales, the Silmarillion shall be deemed authoritative unless the questioner specifies otherwise.
Have fun everyone! I'll start us off:
Elbereth was the Sindarin form of the name of which Vala?

| From The Silmarillion
Varda - 'The Exalted', 'The Lofty'; also called the Lady of the Stars. Greatest of the Valier, the spouse of Manwe, dwelling with him on Taniquetil. Other names of Varda, as maker of the stars, were Elbereth, Elentari, Tintalle.
(Now that I have a copy of The Silmarillion, I can look up stuff like this.) New Question:
What were the names of the two "great lamps" raised up by the Valar "for the lighting of the Middle-earth".

| Orcs
Wargs
Men
Elves
Dwarves
Eagles
Beron
Well, those are all of the armies that fought. The last one, you can give or take if you so desire. I'm not completely positive of the spelling of Beron, it's been so long since i have read the book. |

| Yay! I was going to say "Winken' and Blinken'" but changed my mind
Anyways, here's a slightly easier one that you probably won't need any reference for (Noelle really got me when she said I couldn't use all of those books that nobody has read).
In what year was Gerontius born? |

| I'll go ahead and ask a question then...
In the films, did Legolas shot the arrow into the cave troll from a left or right handed position? |

| Well, since it is a one in three chance of getting it right, I'll say a left handed position.
(Why did I say a one in three chance, and not one in two? The three choices are: Left, Right, or the book doesn't say and you just like being difficult. )

Well, since it isn't left the answer is pretty obvious. He shot from the ever standard right handed posiiton. This is because Orlando is right handed.. yes. I'll ask another one then. a man tall and storng. his shield was red. And he came to the valley's brink, he set his lips a great black horn and blew a rining blast.
Who is this?
Hint: He is a man of Rohan, singled out in part of the work... That is about all you hear about him. |
