To rephrase my question, since it apparently confuses some:

How did Thorin get Oakenshield as his last name?

(That sentence is horrible sounding, but I did try to simplify it a lot, so please forgive me.)

What was the more common name for the Dwarvish city that they, the Dwarves, refered to as Gabilgathol?

At the battle of azanulzibar (I think), he lost his shield while fighting so he lopped of a gigantic oak branch and used that to ward off blows. Hence, Thorin Oakenshield.
