From Worthless To Worthwhile

"From Worthless To Worthwhile"
By: Zach Wood
Psalm 119:37 (NLT)
Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word.

There's a lot in life that we can consider worthless. Each of us has different opinions about what is worthless and what is valuable. What you as an individual would consider very worthwhile and breathtaking may be considered worthless and a total waste of time to someone else. There are just some things that each of us see as worthwhile and others see as worthless. We would probably all agree that we should spend our time each day doing things that are worthwhile. Whether it be the work we are doing at our daily job site, the exercise routine we have in the morning, afternoon or evening, the places we go to spend our free time and take in entertainment or how we might relax and have some quiet time, we should make our time worthwhile for what we are doing.

God wants us to make our time worthwhile. I will be the first to admit that I sometimes spend my time each day doing some worthless things. I try not to, but I end up doing so. Sometimes I forget that I need to just sit, chill and have some quiet moments alone by myself with God. There are other times when I should be out with some friends and family doing some fun activities and not staying at home stuck to the TV or computer. Not only are activities something to consider, but also what we listen to, watch, dwell on and what we say. Are we letting our precious eyes take in the muck and junk of this world? It's quite easy to do really. We all have weaknesses and there are times when we let our minds and eyes wander where they should not be.

We say we want Life in Jesus Christ, however, many times we are not living and striving as we should to attain more of that life. There are things and ways we need to surrender to Him in order to receive more of His Life and lose what the world wants to give. I'll admit that I get pretty stuck on the ways of the world too much. I consider something very worthwhile and spend lots of time with whatever that "something" might be and I leave God on the backburner. I seem find anything else other than reading my Bible, praying and sharing with others to fill my time, when my heart really longs to know my Father more. The desire is there, but the worthless things of life catch my attention more. I'm not saying that anything other than reading the Bible, praying and sharing with others is worthless. But I am saying that when we spend a majority of our time doing anything more than spending time with God and growing in our faith, then those distractions need to become worthless compared to the worthwhile things God wants for us to spend time on.

If we truly want Life, we need to diligently seek it. Through His Word, through prayer, through serving others, and being an example of Christ. What more worthwhile things could you do than to further the Kingdom with your time each day? I'm thinking of a song by Charlie Hall called, "Give Us Clean Hands". It's a truly beautiful song. One part of the verse says, "We turn our eyes from evil things, oh Lord we cast down our idols." The chorus speaks, "Give us clean hands, give us pure hearts." I get tears in my eyes just thinking of the words. If we truly desire to have Life through Jesus Christ, we must lay down our idols of the world that are worthless and that we spend way too much time with. God wants us to have clean hands and a pure heart before Him. Giving Him EVERYTHING! How can we possibly turn our filthy eyes and dirty hands from the world to Christ if we are wallowing in the muck of the world? We must turn away from the worthless things of the world and turn to Christ, lift our hands, hearts and eyes to Him so that He can cleanse us and make us new.

Christ calls us to worthwhile living, not worthless living. Which do you seek?

Talking On the same page..

I agree. I thought I was the only one trying to win his heart, yet constantly finding I allow myself to be distracted by "worthless" activities. I've discovered in order for me to give him more time, I have to turn off the tv,unplug the phone, and completely immerse in his word. He is what I seek.
