If I listened to them all the time I would hate them, but the occasional listen makes them a great band for me. Their acoustic side is great, but I only really like it when it's mixed in with their metal stuff. I like their metal riffs, stuff like "Bleak" is awesome riff wise. Their drummer annoys me a bit and it's only because Akerfeldt growls that they are called death metal. They are not death metal, just progressive metal with harsh vocals. |

| It has one characteristic of death metal. So what? Are MxPx death metal because they are fast? |

| Opeth aren't really intensely fast, especially their newer stuff. As for complexity, old school death metal had none of it. Newer technical death metal does, but that doesn't mean it's a characteristic of the genre. Really, the only thing I can see in Opeth that resembles death metal is the vocals. |

| Death are a great great band. Whether they defined death metal is debatable, but I tend to agree that they did. A lot people think it started with Posessed's Seven Churches.
Anyway, it sounds like you haven't heard much early Death. The newer stuff was progressive and technical and all, but at the start, Chuck definitely took brutality and a raw sound over technicality. Also, their vocals aren't remotely similar. |

| All of their albums? Nice work, that's a lot of listening.
Classifying Opeth as death metal does not work. After all, if you can call them death metal, surely you can call Meshuggah and any number of metalcore band death metal? Obviously not. Extreme progressive metal maybe, but not death metal. |
