The movie experience is all about the equipment you display the movie on, not so much the movie itself. Any modern U.S. made movie played on a large HDTV with at least a progressive scan HD-Convert DVD player and a good Dolby Digital Home Theater System will do the job.
As far as U.S. made, I am not trying to sound bias, but let's face it, Hollywood spends the most money on movies, hence better special effects.

That should be innocent enough

Hi... I'm art... you know, the thing that modern society has forgotten about... it's nice to meet you, Mr. U.S. Consumer.

I imagine we're assuming this person had no experience with any other audiovisual formats either (ie television)?

I'd say Star Wars (one of the originals) would be a pretty safe bet. It always amazed me how perfect the Star Wars music was, both in terms of its compositional effectiveness and its actual timing / placement in the film; the music together with the well-known special effects mastery (at least for its time) would cover the actual raison d'etre for film (its audio+visual nature), and the story itself has a rather typical, in that it's not too difficult to follow, plot that is still pleasing to watch unfold. Star Wars certainly does a good job of displaying how the medium of film can be used to tell a story, which is something you'd want to show to a first-time movie viewer (providing they *ahem* appreciated such things and didn't just want to have an IMAX experience [not that there's anything wrong with that, per se... but...]).

Excuse me? You can not be your own worthy opponent.

No, but me being a person who still watches the majority of films on a 13 inch television that is 15 years old through VHS can certainly realize that things have gone screwy when the US government is pratically forcing me to get a digital TV. And I would beg to differ that special effects make a movie good; it's usually vice-versa. Not to say special effects can't be amazing (Star Wars, for example) but the recent junk such as King Kong and War of the Worlds shows how millions upon millions of dollars can be spent on something just so it can be there for the sake of it.
