I use finger style picking for two main reasons

1. I believe you can get more versitliy when you've got two surfaces able to strike the string instead of one, and you can get a really nice round sound from using your fingers.

2. It has nothing to do with playing or playing ability but for some reason I can't keep up with picks. I can usually keep up with a pick for a week or so and then I lose it so I stopped wasting money on them (even though I never really played bass with a pick and picks don't usually cost a whole lot)

I use both, but mostly I use my fingers. Picking sounds cool for harder rock and punk, but it really doesn't work well for most situation. Plus, with your fingers it's easier to switch styles to slap or thumb-plucking.

It totally depends on the type of song - they both give really different sounds.
FIngers are more versitile, but you cant get that sharp attack with fingers, that you can get with a pick.
I uaually use fingers, tho

I hate picks with a passion.

But I walk A LOT, so fingers are more practical.

I always use fingers. I can do it faster with them and as someone else said you can slap quicker and stuff. Though picking does give it that nice juicy sound.

I use my fingers, i find they are more versatile than just a pick. Every now and then i like to experiament with a pick though.

I personally am more comfortable using fingers. Some songs may sound better with a pick but I still use my fingers.

I use my fingers but i can use a pick. reasons: I dont like using a pick, I can't seem to pick fast enough with it and I like the sound finger-plucking gets.

i usually use my fingers but i can use a pick, but if i want a more sharp sound with my finger i just turn the tone knob down to where it doesnt blend the notes im playin together...(if u have a knob that does that and play w/ fingerse and want a shaprer sound try that ).

Where's the "it depends" option?

Nothing like the sound of a palm-muted and picked line...can we say Carol Kaye? Or how about Tony Levin's picked fretless through octaver line on Sledgehammer?

I use my fingers most of the time, but I do keep picks close by.

finger

I always use my fingers when playing for a show. Also I feel that using a pick makes the bass just a dumbed down version of a guitar. Don't get me wrong I am a hardcore bass player all the way. I just like to slap alot which I think is even harder than advance guitar solos. (If you do it right of course) I'm not bugging on guitar players either though. It's also nice that when you use your fingers you can mute a string easily so it doesn't sound muddy when you play the next one. Plus with your fingers you can do some crazy harmonies. Like play the bass and tenor line from a song at the same time. I also do some tapping and you definitely can't use a pick for that.

I use both depending on the sound I want to get out of it. Sometimes I even use both in the same song.
