It just totally depends on the song...I use both. I get a quicker and sharper attack with a pick, and a warmer tone with my fingers. Anyway, I keep forgetting or losing my picks, but I haven't lost my fingers...yet.

I like the sound a lot better using my fingers. I occasionally use a pick, mostly for two note pseudo chords and whatnot.

i use fingers more than pick because of the punch you get and since i can use my index, middle, ring fingers and occasionally the thumb for slaping and poping octaves the fingers just seem better.

yah fingers man, but i can do both, if it's and easy song that is played with a pick i'll usually use double stops or just put my thumb and index together and just strum, i don't think you need a pick, well personally i don't, if a song is required with a pick i just use my fingers in a strumming method anyway .

i can use both but i hate usin a pick cause any guitarist switchin to bass can use a pick , real bassist use there hands, the bass player for queen uses a pick sometimes so pickin aint that bad , i just think true bassists use their hands

Picks utterly ruin the sound of a bass. Look at some of the songs off of Blindside's album 'Silence'. The biggest culprits are 'Time Will Change Your Heart' and 'Pitiful'. Those songs would sound sooooooooooo infinitely much better if he hadn't used a pick. The guitar in those songs is played up a little higher, but the twangy sound of the bass doesn't make any low end noise at all. Just a wraroaowoawoaorow sound that is horrible to my ears.

I used to use a pick. I still kick myself for it. Fingers are really the best way to go. If you must play with the tone, use your thumb (slap or plucking), mess with the tone knob, or get a pedal. Seriously, picks make you look like a poor man's guitarist. It's horrible.

Plenty of pro-bassist play with picks especially Shred, Neoclassical and thrash bassist. Now there are some bassist who can keep up with intense thrash with fingers but they are few and far inbetween. I use and endorse both styles. Personally sometimes ill even use both techniques like chicken pickin. I know its not cool to use a pick . I think its just finger bassist discrimination.

The dude from Coheed and Cambria, Victor Wooten, and John Myung, among others can go at quite a clip without a pick.

When I play bass I take the tone and playability into consideration and decide from there. I haven't developed an incredible finger-picking technique on either instrument as far as speed goes, but it's usually good enough for my purposes. That said, I use fingers when it adds to the arrangment and use a pick when applicable or if I feel it necessary in order to keep up.

Fingers, it just fits better with what I'm playing right now, and the versatility issue that was spoken on earlier. I do practice with a pick from time to time so that I can when/if I need to, but fingers give me the thump I like. Picks sound to clean. What is the point of playing bass without that greasy, grimy, down and dirty thump!! My motto: Give me thump or give me death. I said it!
