Pedaling

I took piano for awhile and Ive taught myself a lot too. Anyway, the only pedaling technique I was taught was in 4/4 time and to pedal every downbeat of a measure. Ive noticed throughout my years that this isnt always true. Is there other techniques??

In popular music (i.e. "not classical") styles, I usually pedal on every chord change. A good rule of thumb is to think of how "muddy" or "mushy" you want the music to sound, and then change the pedal often enough to achieve (disachieve) the desired amount of muddiness. Use your ear. Also, when you pedal, do the change (up, and back down) immediately AFTER playing the note/chord that you want to be included in the new pedal, and NOT before playing that note.

In His love,
Nate
