What's a trigger?

I don't where to go to ask, but I've seen the term trigger used with keyboards. So, does anyone know what it is?

It could refer to "triggering" a sample or a loop. In that case, you'd be thinking of say, selecting a drum loop, then pressing a key to start that loop. Or mapping a bunch of samples to your keyboard, then by pressing certain keys you could "trigger" different sound effects.

It could also refer to a drum trigger... which is used mostly in electronic percussion, but I guess could somehow be used with keyboards. A trigger, in the electronic percussion sense, is something that determines how hard a pad is it, where it is hit, when it is hit, etc, etc... then transfers this information to a brain (like the Roland TD-10 or Yamaha DTX), the brain then plays back a certain drum sound depending on all the info it gets back from the triggers. Most brains can support at least 10 triggers.... there is a different one for each part of the drum set.... bass, snare, toms, cymbals, etc.

That's about all I think of when I hear "trigger"..... does either of those sound right? More than likely, you were hearing something about the first case.

HAHA.... very funny...

Q: What do you give a keyboard player who has everything?

A: A bass player to show him how to use it.
