| The night was uncomprimisingly cold; and wet. Sabertooth was not feeling all his best, he had compiled no additional leads in the case of Small's death, and there was something puzzling about the entire situation; but he couldn't lay his finger on it.
Meanwhile, not back at the ranch, but instead, at the police station, Lizwrenne was meticulously punching in the numbers in sequence, 181-neal.
"Hello, you've reached the premises and offices of Sabertooth181, Private Investigator, how may I help you???"
"Neal??" relief washed through both Lizwrenne and her voice, "Neal, this is Lauren, I've been arrested. Something about the murder of Small." her voice cracked, "Neal, you gotta come, I don't know what to do, and, I..." her voice trailed off as one's does, when there are only shreds of the world hanging about, laughing like nasty little schoolboys; well did sabertooth recognize the tone.
"Look, Lauren, I'll help you out, just stay put, don't say anything, and it'll be okay, I'll take care of everything. Okay?? Okay." he finished, before she could respond, "hold tight."
He hung up the phone and exploded into confused thoughts, what had happened??? How had Lauren been arrested??? There had been nothing, nothing but motive. She hadn't even known Small, at least not very well, when he died. There was not enough evidence to provide such an arrest. Had SMALL talked, that idiotic little neurotic, psychotic, wretched, sneaky, stupid, horrid kid squeaked what he knew?
Sabertooth threw on his hat and trenchcoat and was about to leave, when, on second thought, he dropped an elegant, yet diminutive, pistol into his belt. Then he burst out into the dark environs and was gone.
Small was not at home when sabertooth rang, or at least, he made no evidence of presence. When Sabertooth inquired with his neighbors, the frightened little people answered him truthfully that they THOUGHT that Small was out tonight, dining with one Natedawg at the Italian Palace.
Sabertooth knew both these individuals very well, and, being himself, he knew the shortest way to the Italian Palace, which was through the back.
After arriving, he gave his respects to the proprietor and informed said owner of his pressing business with two patrons. Accordingly, sabertooth's order was taken, and he was conducted to the table at which Small and Nate were dining.
Both looked up, Nate smiled, but Small looked troubled, Small was the first to speak,
"Any developments?"
"In what" inquired the sardonic detective.
"The murder case."
"You ought to know."
"And how so?"
"Lauren has been arrested."
Now both men started upright, mouths hanging open.
"Did you tell anyone?" asked Sabertooth, pointing at Small.
"I didn't tell anyone."
And suddenly, Sabertooth slumped down, deflated, the three looked at each other questioningly through a silence until at last Nate voiced the collective thought of the trio,
"Then who did?"

Home alone today, and having a great time alone, I played some guitar, worked on some songs, stuff like that...Drank a boatload of Mountain Dew, some of which I'm still consuming....
Oh, speaking of, I'm not getting anyplace with "Insofar as Questions go," so if you have any ideas, I would gladly take 'em.
It was past midnight, that much Small knew. Past two if you took the clock on the wall of the restaraunt to be true. But one should never trust to much concerning all-night restaraunt and bar set-ups, so Small just assumed that it was pretty close.
The trio had moved away from the italian palace when it closed, and come to Sabertooth's "stomping grounds" as he called them. The place really was too shabby and seedy for his tastes, but it was close by his office, and when one is puzzling over the wickedness of man at midnight, food, coffee and sympathetic, albiet tired, company is almost always preferable to one's own spookish detective office, so here they were.
They had been throwing scenarios at each other for a long time, puzzling over each new hypothesis, and shooting each other's down by punching massive holes, or maybe just pinpricks into the ideas.
Sometimes the talk deviated, when they desperately needed some sort of brain rest. they all had massive caffiene overload, so to rest their brains with sleep would have been impossible.
Nate had been gone for maybe two hours right around ten thirty to midnight, making sure everything went smoothly at the newspaper. He'd written an editorial concerning the entire affair, and pasted it on the front page, as an editor is allowed to do, if he so chooses.
Now he was back, even more tired from all his encounters with a newspaper office, which is a tiring place to be anytime, but late at night, when it was bustling with activities, had left him exhausted but unable to sleep.
Sabertooth had just finished pointing out an error in Small's latest answer to the riddle when the young waitress, who was sitting three tables over, reading the newspaper which proudly proclaimed Natedawg as its editor, exclaimed aloud about how she thought this whole thing was pretty strange.
"What thing?" inquired Small, raising his sagging face from on his hands to ask.
"This thing about Small being killed, and now they arrested Lizwrenne, and the editor of the paper doesn't think it was fair or something, so he wrote a giant story about it and put it on the front page....It's not that big a deal...Besides, all the evidence says she did it, so why's he think he knows better???"
"Because," answered Natedawg coldly, "I do know better."
"Eh?"
" I wrote that."
"Oh....I'm sorry, well, why do you think that?" she asked, folding the newspaper.
"It would be better if my friend Sabertooth here discussed it miss--miss--"
"The name is Bass_Girl" answered the young woman.
"Ah, well then, Sabertooth will explain the whole thing."
So Sabertooth told the story from the beginning, making notes of all the strange turns of events. The waitress looked increasingly thoughtful as the story progressed,
"Well," she said, when the detective was done, "I think we could probably fill some of the holes by talking to the police officers in charge of the investigation."
"And who is that?" asked Natedawg, directing his attention on Small and Sabertooth.
"Inspector Small." they answered in unison.

| Shut up Small!!!
The sweatband looks fake, because it is...Small put it on there because he thinks it looks cooler than just his bare arm...furthermore, note how his ridiculous hair sticks up in the back because he slept on it wrong, is that not stupid???
HA!

| as Sabertooth was filling in the now mystified Bass_girl, Small was absent-mindedly scanning his surroundings. his drooping, bloodshot eyes rested suspiciously on a tall man sitting in a shadowy corner of the restaurant slowly sipping a coke of some kind. the man obviously hadn't shaved in about two weeks and the odd-looking bald lines on his cheeks outlined a goatee on his chin. he was wearing a black leather duster and a black fedora, and his eyes were indistinguishable, partially becuase of the gloom cast by his the hat, and partially because his hair hung down over them in the front. "thats an interesting haircut" Small thought off-hand, "his hair is longer in the front than in the back, its like a reverse mullet, except it looks really cool, kind of like Christian from Blindside..." even though he couldn't see the man's eyes, something inside told him he was intensely observing the trio at the table. Small decided to go see what the man wanted.
He excused himself from the table and slowly made his way over to the man. as he sat down he noticed two bulges on either side of the man's hips "hmm... desert eagles, i'd be willing to bet," he thought, "that's the only gun i know of that size. i'd better be careful what i say." the man didn't say anything or even acknowledge Small's presence. Small self-consciously cleared his throat and said, "i noticed you were watching us." the man grunted under his breath. Small couldnt decide if it was a small chuckle or a sound of derision. "so... do you want something or do you just like to stare at people?" the man grunted again and said in a gravelly half-whisper, "i heard you're looking for evidence." Small started slightly at that, "what could this guy know?" he thought. he decided to play along, "yes, we could use any evidence, but.... if you don't mind my asking, what connection could you have to this situation?"
the man raised his head slightly so the light could illuminate his eyes a little bit, but they were dark, very dark, like windows into an abyss. "well, i guess you could say i have... emotional connections to one of the victims in this case. you see, i'm lauren's husband." This took Small totally off-guard. this time he visibly started, his jaw dropping and eyes bulging as if he had suddenly lost control of all facial expression. "but, but... she... she isn't married!" "not according to the books, no, but that's for reason's i'm not at liberty to discuss. i actually 'don't exist', so to speak, you can draw your own conclusions." Small's already dazed mind was now spinning and flipping like a bird at the bad end of a shotgun, "i... what... wh-......", he studdered. "do you want the dirt or not?" the man said quietly, sipping from his coke. "y.. ya, i want it." "alright here it is: lauren is innocent. and this is why. number one: she wasn't in this city at the time of the crime. you see, i've been shadowing this "Small" for some time now... i can't tell you why, you'll just have to satisfy yourself with the fact that he was... not in good standing with some higher-ups." the man paused again to non-chalantly take a sip of his coke as Small began to sweat with impatience. "see, i figured something was gonna go down, so i got lauren out of town, we didn't know exactly what scale the... disturbance... would be. so i can tell you that she wasn't here. she was, in fact, in colorado at the time, she's just not supposed to say that because... well... it 'didn't happen'. but i thought i could trust you and your friends after watching ya'll for a while. now, second, lauren didn't do it because, very simply, i know who did." as fuddled as Small's mind had been before, it didn't compare to its present state. he thought he might pass out from confusion and surprise but the man went on. "unfortunately, i'm also not at liberty to divulge that information. however, i can... point you in the right direction. if i were you, i'd try looking in the 'm' forum. i'm sorry i can't tell you more." with that, he rose deliberately from his seat, downed the rest of the coke, and started towards the door. "wait!" Small said, "i didn't get your name." "Strat, Stratguitarist" the man said quietly and sontered out of the restaurant, the tails of his duster gliding just above the floor behind him.
