Question, are most American beers that light? I think it was 4.7%. Just wondering because it is a common Canadian prejudice to make fun of American beer and how light they are. | Stay away from Miller, Anything with the name 'Bud' in it, Coors, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Yeungling, etc.
The only good American beers I see leaving the U.S. would probably be Sam Adams? That's about it.
Btw, the most evil beer I've ever had was from Stone Brewery. It's called the Arrogant Bastard. It's... just wrong... It's probably rougher than 10 grit sandpaper. It will drag you thru the mud. I can only drink it if I'm in a VERY bad mood. It will put hair on your testicles, and if you're a woman, you'll grow them and then grow hair on them...

| I went to the local cigar shop today looking for a pipe and pipe tobacco.
I bought the cheapest pipe they had, it's like a Frosty The Snowman pipe, it's made from a corn cob. Then I bought some real tobacco, not some packaged stuff from the corner store, real stuff (dangit, I forget the name already). It was $15 for 25 grams. I attempted to smoke a bowl, but evidently, I have a lot to learn. I looked up directions on how to correctly pack a pipe, i'll give it another go soon.

I know the pros usually speak out against the use of your thumb, but does it actually make much a difference? Especially for a beginner?

As said before, it'll take a few times to season the pipe.
Remember when you're packing to put the tobacco in in phases. First put some in gently like a child, then the next bit put in and pack like a woman, then pack the rest like a man. Burn the top once, then pack it lightly and spread the ash even. Then proceed to smoke.
I recommend using a match for lighting. It doesn't taste like lighter fluid and is a little easier to light with once you get the hang of it. |

| I always use a match, even for cigars. I try the phases, we'll see if i'm more successful next time, haha. I think my man packing is too manly.

You can always test before lighting by seeing if you get good airflow just by sucking through the stem. You've got to remember the whole concept of smoking hinges on proper airflow and even burning. If you can't even get air through it you're going to get a bad draw, and if you get too much air, you'll fizzle out or burn too quickly. |

| Since we're on pipe smoking... what tobacco is everyone using these days? I had some no name stuff that a friend from home gave me, but that's all gone now, and I'm looking for something new. |

| I had a shot of vodka tonight, fallowed by a St. Bernadus Tripel ale. The vodka wasn't my thing, I thought it was really gross actually. The ale was awesome, noticeably different tasting than any lager i've had so far. The idea of ales intrigue me now, i'm wanting to venture into some other ales sometime.
Is anyone an ale drinker here? Any suggestions?

#4604 | | Algebraic! | I'm not a huge ale guy. About the only ale that I drink on a regular basis is Newcastle Brown Ale. |

I've been trying to move back to my pipe with cavendish.
