| I smoke a pipe and enjoy it very much. Unfortunately many people were offended so I had to pretend it was sin and do it when nobody was around. There were some cases of smokers who quit because they thought it was sin, so I figured I wouldn't smoke around them even though I believe there is nothing sinful about it.
A friend of mine has a long 'Gandalf' pipe. As cool as it looks it doesn't smoke very well. |

You never want to completly remove it, it is thoroughly broken in at that point. Take only enough out to be able to get you finger in the bowl. It is ok to remove the resin that builds up that is soft. But leave as much of the hard stuff as you can.

I learned this the hard way. I over-cleaned my pipe once, the next time I smoked it, the bowl became VERY hot... then the shiney finish bubbled up... yeah, it melted.
It still works... but I really want a different one.

What am I doing wrong? | Do you keep it tamped while you are smoking it? Not tamped to the point that it is tight but just keep it pushed down. I actually have a calous on the tip of my little finger where I use it to tamp instead of something else. I wouldn't recomend it though. Use a tamp or a golf tee. Actually I hardly ever have to relight my pipe.

| I have probably said this before in this thread, but when you pack your pipe leave it down about 1/4 inch or so from the top and it will light much easier and tend to not go out as much. Sometime I will light my pipe and then immediatly tamp it a bit and relight it.

| After doing some research online and readng some reviews, I've decided that if I am ever in the market for a high dollar pipe I'm gonna buy a Jody Davis. |

It has been my experience that the high dollar pipes are not worth the money as far as smoking goes. They may have a value as a collectors piece but not as a good smoke. I do have a few that have been given me and I rarely smoke them.

Besides, what's wrong with a bit of indulgence now and then? |

He left the band a couple of years ago and set up his own shop in Arizona. His pipes start at about $425 and top out around $1700. Apparently he's becoming quite well-known for his work.
I will admit that I'm nowhere near buying something like that right now, but I can envision myself as an old retired geezer with one of his pipes one day. |
