b c CFM: Cubic Feet per Minute. A measure of the flow capacities for a Carb or Throttle Body.
D DOHC: Dual Over Head Camshafts.
DSM: Diamond Star Motors. If you own an Eclipse, it was built by these folks, not Mitsubishi.
e EFI: Electronic Fuel Injection.
f FI: Forced Induction (turbo/supercharger).
FI: Fuel Injection.
Flat 4: Opposing or boxer engine. Two banks of 2 cylinders (two valve covers). Subaru, Volkswagen and Porsche employ opposing engines.
Flat 6: Opposing or boxer engine. Two banks of 6 cylinders (two valve covers). Subaru and Porsche.
FWD: Front Wheel Drive or Four Wheel Drive.
g H i I4: I4 = One bank of 4 cylinders (one valve cover). What resides under your hood if you have a four cylinder (unless Subaru or Porsche resides on your hood).
I6: One Bank of 6 cylinders (one valve cover).
j k Kit Car: A car that is sold new without major parts (engine, tranny, etc) to be assembled by the owner and avoid government crash testing and emissions.
L LSD: Limited slip differential.
m MT: Manual Transmission.
n NA: Naturally Aspirated (no turbo/supercharger).
NOS: Dork term for nitrous. Nitrous Oxide Systems is a company. Nitrous is a gas. Don't say "NOS" unless that company built your system.
o OHC: Over Head Camshaft.
OHV: Over Head Valve (Cam in block, pushing the valves open using rods and rockers).
p Posi: Posi-Trac = Limited slip differential, GM specific.
Q r Rally Racing: A racing style most popular in Europe; it entails driving too fast down dirt roads in the forest, dried riverbeds and sand dunes in the desert, or gravel road hillclimbs up mountains. Rally Race Cars typically have small engines with lots o' hp.
RWD: Rear Wheel Drive.
s SOHC: Single Over Head Camshaft.
Sure-Grip: Limited slip differential, Mopar Specific.
t TB: Throttle Body. Fuel injected cars often have these. Some new ones do not.
Trac-Loc: Limited slip differential, Ford Specific.
uUSDM: United States Direct Market. Cars that are available for sale here.
v V4: Two banks of 2 cylinders (two valve covers). You are riding a motorcycle, Cars DO NOT have this motor.
V6: Two banks of 3 cylinders (two valve covers).
V8: Two banks of 4 cylinders.
V10: Two banks of 5 cylinders.
V12: Two banks of 6 cylinders (two valve covers).
W W8: Four banks of 2 cylinders.
W12: Four banks of 3 cylinders.
