Pet allergies....Achoo!!!

So, I was at my roommates house this weekend, and came to a horrid realization. I am allergic to cats!!! They are my favorite pet also! This makes me so sad. We have always had cats, just not in the house, so I guess it was not so noticable-but it does explain the fact that I had been sneezing for about the past two years.

I am soo very sad! I don't wanna be allergic to my favorite animal.

Are any of you guys allergic?

Yes! I am dreadfully allergic to cats (they make me wheeze and my face swells if i don't take my medication)... Also to guinea pigs, chinchillas, dogs (very mild), and i am sure most other hairy pets.

sad, i am not so affected as that--but enough to the point that I was in constant sneezedom while there, excepting while under medication-and then still stopped up

how did you manage to just realize this now?

I mean....why didn't you know before?

Did you just become allergic (i'm not mocking...allergies do change over time. i used to be allergic to pennicellin, but not anymore )

well, before the cat was outside, so I did not pinpoint is as a cause. Also, allergies do develop over time, and i suspect this is anywhere as recent as a few months to a couple of years.

It was just made very obvious when in a home with three cats, and I was immediately under attack.

fortunately I'm not allergic (living with 6 cats and all... )

I have a friend who's greatly allergic, though. so much so that she can't come over.

I'd say. I used to not be allergic to anything, but now I am allergic to a whole lot of animals, some trees, hay, pollen, dust, ragweed...etc...

Are you guys serious? Allergies grow? I always think that it's something genetically inherrited, so it's you-have-it or you-don't-have-it kinda thing.

Nope. Allergies can get better or worse over time. I didnt have any till I was 7.
I am very allergic to cats. This is a problem, as my girlfriend (of 6 months, in one week!) has a cat who loves me.

I used to have pretty bad pet allergies, but they've eased up lately. I would advise you to take Claritin when you're going to be around animals. It's the best allergy medicine I've used, especially since it doesn't make you drowsy.

I've also heard that you can go for monthly shots if you have pet allergies, but I don't know much about that.

I think it's partly genetic, but they can develop as well. Like I said, I didn't have any till college. Now I'm allergic to like everything.

Claritin doesn't work for me. It works for like 3 days then it stops. I take Zyrtec and Zyrtec D but only during the seasons that they're super bad (in the winter and fall they're annoying, but I can manage, and I don't want to develop an immunity to Zyrtec) and then I have an Albuterol Inhaler for when it gets really bad.

Latte

Hmm, that probably explains why I sneeze when I'm cleaning. I never had this problem before (or is it because I never clean when I still live with my parents? Naaahh...)

I hope I won't get allergic to animals, I love animals soooo mucch (except insects, especially cockroach )
