W. Booth a Methodist minister in 1865 started a little group called the "Christian Mission" and in 1878 changed their name to the "Salvation Army", and came to America in 1880.

No guns, just the word of God and some social service activities, it's run by ministers that wear a military rank. (not part of the goverment) They number about 400,000 in the U.S. and are all over the world today.

I've heard of them. I know some people who attend their churches, they seem to be pretty sound people.

Thanks guys for the kind words. A lot of people do not relize that the Salvation Army is a church. Most people that have seen the kettles out at Christmas time and think that is what we do to help the poor during the holiday season, but it's a fact that we operate 365/24/7. We have a good youth dept. My wife and I went to youth councils this year and enjoyed the programs, even if we are in our forties! Like every church, the pastors are different at each church. If you are looking for a new church home, check them out, there's one near by.

I don't attend a SA church, but I help out in the soup kitchen once a week and am involved and have a decent relationship with the Captains.

The previous captains were moved about a year or so ago, which was a bummer for me. I had gotten pretty close to them and the two kids they had adopted from Guatemala. I guess they're in a church in Michigan or something.

I think I pretty much agree with the church, except for the fact that it seems they don't allow baptism or communion. The previous captain here had to get specific permission each time he wanted to do communion, and even that was only once or twice a year...

That's cool that you help in the soup kitchen,we have a lot of young people do that along with their leaders.I haven't heard about the permission for communion, that's a first for me. Baptism is a touchy subject for most Salvationist. Personally,I think that wanting to get baptised is pretty cool,I've been to a few of them. We believe in strongly of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. We also agree with John Wesley, who believed it is possiable to live a sinless life, with help of the Holy Spirit. We are dedicated to the Lord, when we are sworn in,and sign the Articles of War. If you like to volunter kitchen work, you should try ringing bells,it's a blast!
