#91 | | Algebraic! | so last night we had a decibel meter in our practice area. So I put it in a few common mic'd spots: the bass drum, the guitar amp speaker, and the bass amp speaker.
Here's the results
120-125db in each position. I was actually pretty impressed that our sound was that well balanced in terms of each of us being pretty much the same. Of course, after two years, you'd figure we'd have to at least be getting our practices right. |

| Wow, that's pretty loud, man. Do you guys wear ear protection during practice? I think we practice around 80 db or so. We've never had a decibel meter, but our bass player is an acoustician, and that's what his estimate was. |

I'm not entirely sure how accurate it was either. It measured my guitar for worship team at 98db at about 6 feet, and the worship team through the PA in our church at 92db. Those both seemed a little high to me, especially my guitar volume, since my amp volume was about at 9 o'clock.
It's also a bit surprising how fast the levels drop. At mic'd level, the bass drum was at 125db. At about 15ft, the drum kit was measuring around 110, maybe less (I can't remember the exact number, except that it was low enough to surprise me) |

| Well, we practice at pretty low volumes. A train horn is about 120 decibels, so that gives you some idea. 130 is the pain threshold. Maybe your meter isn't accurate, I dunno. |

#95 | | Algebraic! | Does anyone here want to participate in the YFB internet interview that I'm doing for our myspace page? Here's the details, largely copied from a bulletin I already posted:
This is your chance to interview YFB. Ask us some questions and we'll answer them. Ask us about our lives, our music, our inspirations, what we think about life, love and why.
I'll collect all of your questions and compile them into an interview blog. If you've got a specific question for a specific member of YFB then make sure you indicate that in your question.
Please no surveys, no "will you date me?" questions either...we're all occupied with women. Let's keep this entertaining, educational, and fun...or something. If I get a list of 50 questions that's been pulled off of a bulletin or some other survey type thing, it's getting deleted. I'm going to go ahead and make the deadline for this November 17th, two weeks from today.
In addition to posting it on myspace, I'll also post all of the questions and answers in this thread here. Even better than asking the question in this thread would be to PM the question to me...that way it won't be revealed to the general audience until the interview is completed.

| I love "Blowing Up the Internet". Awesome song.

This negatively affected my tone in ways that I just can't describe.
Then, on a whim, a few years ago I wandered into a Bath and Body Works store at a local mall and picked up some of their gentle foaming anti-bacterial hand cleansers.
The difference in my guitar's sound is so wickedly improved that I no longer feel the need to buy a new amp or pedals or even strings...EVER!
So, it's my belief that tone is in the soap.
Thank you and goodnight. | |

| Hey... This thread deserves to be on the first page.
Anyways. I need to ask you a question.
Am I crazy to think that "Blowing Up the Internet" is remiscent the Dead Kennedys? It's a great song.

As far as what it's reminiscent of...I have no idea. Ryan writes alot of the songs, though for that song in particular started with the bass line/opening guitar riff that Adam came up with. We started there and moved forward. I actually think it started out as an AC/DC inspired song a la "Dirty Deeds". How it ended up getting to the final product that's on the recording...I honestly don't remember.
I do know we started with two ideas, first was "Everybody loves you, you're having a great time" and the idea that we (youth) have become a Myspace/Internet obsessed society where we've become lazy and socially inept because we're too busy trying to get more people on our friends list. |

#104 | | Algebraic! | I've decided to start trying to handle online merch sales.
We normally sell our t-shirts for $5 at shows. I think we're going to sell them online for $7 to cover shipping and what not. If you're interested, send us a myspace message ( www.myspace.com/yourfavoriteband). If you dont' have a myspace then shoot us an email at yfb@cox.net
If I can get a spool of CD-Rs I'll probably start including a burned copy of the incompleted YFB demo from late 2005 for another $1 or so. Prices on the whole aren't completely firm as I've yet to really sit down and figure out what shipping costs are. I think I can ship a t-shirt for $2 inc. packaging, but it might take a little more. |
