#76 | | Algebraic! | So on May 12th 2006, YFB opened up the evening concert at the UCSD Sun God Festival.
The line up was
YFB (Main Stage)
Versus the Mirror (Side Stage)
Bedouin Soundclash (MS)
Boy Sets Fire (SS)
Ozma (MS)
No Use For a Name (SS)
Cypress Hill (MS)
Talib Kweli (SS)
My Chemical Romance (MS)
When we played we probably had a crowd of 75-100. Now as many as I had hoped for, but getting the experience of playing on a festival style stage (30-foot suspended speaker towers) was well worth it. People who have been to multiple YFB shows said that it was the best they'd ever heard us.
Our setlist was:
Blowing up the Internet
God Made You Right
Sugar
Growing Pains
Stop Signs
Stalker
I've Got a Job
This was a much slower setlist than we usually put together (we usually only will do two of our slower songs, and by slower I mean 120-140bpm...haha), but it allowed the music to be really tight.
After playing and tearing down we all went out and talked to some of the people in the crowd. They seemed really excited which was cool. We stayed aroud and watched the next few bands. After my girlfriend left around 645, I went backstage to eat dinner. One of the coolest things about the show (aside from the sweet sound system)was that it was fully catered. I had a couple roast beef sandwiches and several other slices of roast beef throughout the night.
I stayed backstage (as did the rest of the band) for most of the rest of the night. I came out during Ozma, but by the time Cypress Hill came on the place was packed and backstage was the uncrowded place to be. When I wanted to see the band playing, backstage passes meant I could go right up to the press pit in front of the stage and watch them from the gap between the stage and the crowd barriers.
I think the funniest thing was that during Cypress Hill and Talib Kweli there were around 12,000 people there. After Talib Kweli there were fireworks to distract the crowd so MCR could get on stage and setup without being watched. During the fireworks, people started leaving in droves! During Cypress Hill it was seriously standing room only. I stayed backstage not only because I wanted to, but because it was pretty much not possible to get out into the crowd. This was not the case during MCR. There was WAY more room on the sides than there was before.
MCR also dropped the f-bomb thirty seconds into their set and had the crowd chanting "f-yeah!" during the middle of their set. Their stage presence wasn't bad (a decent amount of energy), but I can't get over the blatant swearing. It wasn't even like in the middle of a song or just an occasional drop. It really seemed flagrant and excessive. |

| Can't be as bad as when I saw Senses Fail. During one song the lead singer shouted at the crowd, "when I say f***, you say yeah!" He then proceeded to scream the f-word and the crowd screamed back "YEAH!!!" He repeated this three times. On the fourth time, however, he shouted, "when I say f***...you say f***!"
...yeah, that's really cool... |

...yeah, that's really cool... | what's the deal with that?. They were doing the whole, "everybody say f-yeah!" deal...sorta like this
Gerard Way (MCR singer): "Everyone say F-yeah!"
Crowd: "F-yeah!"
GW: "F-yeah!"
Crowd: "F-yeah"
GW: "F-yeah!"
Crowd: "F-yeah!"
...how unoriginal.
In the past we've had the kids repeat "rock n roll!" I've told Ryan that I want to come up with something ridiculous to say like "Pineapple!", "Buffalo!" or "Deoxyribonucleic Acid!" |

| Do the latter. That would mess with the crowd. "When I say 'deoxyribonucleic acid,' you say 'deoxyribonucleic acid!'" |

#83 | | Algebraic! | We played at the Santee Youth Venture in San Diego last Saturday. It's the second show we've played there. Apparently our first show there was the first time they've ever had a concert. The guy that runs the place was totally stoked that we were going to play there again because he didn't know that we were booked (partially because we weren't booked until the last minute).
What Youth Venture is, is basically a teen center that's run by Foothills Community Church in San Diego. It gets kids off of the street by giving them a place to go and hangout after school. They have free video games and pool and such, but the kids have to obey the rules of the place. The cool thing about playing shows there is that the kids come to hangout and listen to whatever bands are playing. It's alot better than playing at places where kids pay $7 or $8 to see their friend's band and leave. These kids don't want to leave because they're stoked to be hanging out there and in turn, they really get into the music and the bands that play.
On Saturday we played with Honor Wounds, Thyne Scabbard and Broken Foundation. I found out that Thyne Scabbard is actually ex-members of Iron Sharpens Iron and Innocent Bloodshed (both of which were fairly popular southern california metalcore bands).
Anyway, when we played we got all of the lights in the place turned off and just had blacklights on stage. It ended up being a really rad effect. I just got pictures posted on the Myspace today in the latest blog. Check them out at this link: www.myspace.com/yourfavoriteband |

There's way too many bands out there that have tons of musicianship but don't seem like they're having any fun...even though they're playing music that should be fun. |
