Grasshopper: uhm....some us us don't have the attention span to read a post that long....but i am one who does....interesting points of view......i probably agree with most...and more so now....i am very easy to persuade if someone knows what they are talking about....and if i makes sense....and i'm hoping the conservatives win the next election...before the liberals change the definition of marriage(americans: the supreme court of canada accually said that our government could try to change the definition of marriage from union between a man and woman, to union between two people)....so the conservatives keep it from happening.....if canada gets too much more socialist, i'm moving to the states....dead serious....i don't want to live in a gay marriage endorsing country...i love canada, but i hate the socialist way...

I realise I ramble, and I'm taking steps to...Nevermind.
I'm kind of hoping that the Conservatives win the next election too, because it's never healthy for a country to be run by one party for too many years...It tends to stagnate things. Witness the MacKenzie King years. What I'm afraid of is that the Tories are more comfortable in opposition than actually leading. They seem to do well as long as they have somebody to fight against, but I wonder if they'll be able to manage actually leading the country, when they have the opposition sharpshooting them each day. Hmm.
Gay marriage. Plug your nose, 'cause it's inevitable. In a secular society, governed by secular principles, the government doens't have the right to discriminate against people on the basis of sexual orientation, or anything else. As far as the Constitution and the Charter are concerned, it's the same as saying that two black people can't legally marry. The only thing that can enact social change in Canada, or anywhere else, is the Gospel, which the Church, for the most part, has been too complacent to spread. I see this as a wake-up call for us.

| you say it's inevitable, i've already decided that....and because of that, i am seriously considering moving to the US once i finish all my post-secondary and apprenticeship stuff...it sucks, cause i love canada, but in light of recent legislation, i am no longer as proud to say i am canadian as i was 5 years ago...

In fact, the US legalised "unionisation" of same-sex couples before Canada did. 10 years ago, to be more precise. It's the same thing as marriage for all practical points (as far as tax laws, census, etc.), except for the title, so really, the battle's long lost on both sides of the border. The concept of two same-sex couples cohabitating as a family unit has long been legal, and I'm beginning to get frustrated by the fact that we're haggling over the form of words with secular courts, and that this is consuming all our time and energy, rather than mobilise as a national church to take the Gospel to our country. We have to recognise that there is a polarisation occurring between the values of the Church and those of the world (especially in the West), and that until we unite for the cause of the Gospel, the countries of our residency will become more and more secular.

Same sex marriage may eventually be allowed in the states but Christianity [in my opinion] isn't as suppressed.
But to the real point of this thread, I fully support Newfoundland. This isn't a matter of a province just wanting some money, Newfoundland needs this money. With it they could work towards recovering from the moratorium. Correct me if I am wrong, I do believe that Newfoundland put a large sum of money for this project and now get a ridiculously low return. with that, Newfoundland has lost the fisheries, Churchill Falls and now Hibernia. I don't think this is fair at all. |

Not only will this draw attention from the entire country, but the only thing that our government seems to react to is embarrassment. |
