Question giving away pet

as anyone who loiters around this forum knows, my husband & I have 6 cats right now: a Mommy, Daddy & 4 kittens. We've been trying to give away 1 of the kittens. That'll be hard enough, but we didn't get really attatched to him, so it won't be as bad as it could be... But here is my problem: I'd been hoping we'd be able to handle 5 kitties. Chris sat me down the other day and said that between vet bills over the next few months (doesn't help that one of them currently has a broken leg and goes to visit our vet once a week) and food & litter we can't afford all 5... When we had this talk we figured it'd be one of the kittens that had to go and of course this broke my heart. Well... off and on over the last while, my cat (the father) has taken to occasionally spraying, peeing, what have you on the bed. or on me. Tonight we found he'd peed on clean laundry. He's fixed. He's also mostly trained. This shouldn't be happening. So this is making me think it's territorial...

'k. so I say all that to say this: quite often you hear people say "I got rid of ________ 'cause they kept peeing on the furniture" or something similar... what do they do when they get rid? give to someone else? send to humane society?

I tried so hard, and got so far. But in the end, it doesn't even matter. I had to fall, to lose it all, yet in the end it doesn't even matter.

You sure don't want to leave your kitty out on the streets of a large city, evidently this other person lives out in the country; even then without claws he is defenseless! Can you imagine... all the traffic...!?! Here is a better option, I used to work for an animal adoption agency in Utah. I don't know where you are located, but if you have a PetsMart or Petco anywhere nearby, they should have a list of adoption agencies and their phone numbers. Most agecies want the animals to be fixed and up to date on there shots, which it sounds like your kitty is. They may ask for a minimal donation as well, but it is worth it, if you don't have to keep cleaning up after Mr. Territorial; also here is your cutback in vet bills. How old is your male? The younger the better, but most places will take him no matter what. If you are concerned about who these people adopt out to, you might ask what their requirements are for adoption. They should be able to show you their adoption application and from their you can see their criteria for "good" owners. In most cases thier idea of a good owner is a lot more rigid than your own idea. Good luck and hope this helps!!! AussieLovin126

update, as of today: there's another pet store in town that should be able to take one of the kittens... and I'll just have to put up ads for the adult. (whom I still hate to part with... )

ok. Update: it wasn't Sundae!! I actually caught one of the kittens peeing on a sweater the other day (grrrrrr. bad kitten) but at least it's not my Sundae, so we're going to be able to keep him!
we took bad kitten (Mittens) to the humane society yesterday. The fee was only $20... and I was sad to have to do it, but... beats having to wash pee out of laundry on a regular basis
so we're down to 5 cats... and I hope to hold that number for awhile...

one of my friends at work said it's 'cause we don't have enough litter boxes, but I dunno... I mean, we have 2 which I clean twice a day!
