Big Band

so i guess big band would go under the "jazz" genre?

so which of you are awesome enough to like it? oh man, i love this stuff..... . i have 2.4 hours of straight 40's big band.

i would have to say that Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, and Les Brown are 3 of my favorites.

I wouldn't call the W's big band at all. You need more than 6 people to be a big band. And ska wouldn't really cut it either.

Most big bands have around 19 members. and a lot more talent.

I'm really big into mel lewis. I think mainly because I spent last year and parts of this year being taught by Bob Brookmeyer.

Although most big bands are "big bands" by size i think that sound and style are more important than size. I will give you that they are not your traditonal big band but it's still good stuff.

what big bands would recomend?

My freind whos listens to FIF will be listening and comment " that was pretty jazzy", thats when my brother turns around and points out it was a mistake in the song. But ska to me is still pretty far away, especially listening to from a drummers standpoint.

I enjoy some of the Quincy Jones stuff, stuff with Louie Bellson and Buddy Rich.

I was about to post about big band music when I came across this (rather old) thread.

But anyawy... I love big band... right now I'm listening to Benny Goodman as a matter of fact... 'cause "it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing..."....heh

Anybody out there ever been to a swing dance? The one I've gone to was great... it was 1940's themed and at the same time was a banquet for WWII Battle of the Bulge Army vets. Since many of us were/are WWII reenactors and still young, everywhere you looked it looked like a USO Club in England in 1944... and wow can those 80+ year old guys dance.

I'd have to say my favorite song arrangment is the Woody Herman version of "G.I. Jive"... its a great feeling at a public WWII display to lounge around with that on the radio in the background...

Big band is refered to as big band because of it's size. A jazz quartet playing the same songs as a big band would not be considered big band.

I recommend anything Mel Lewis..ha...

The big bands are called big bands, because of size, not style.

I enjoy going to the Roger Fox big band concerts here in NZ, they are a 34 piece big band, and play alot of modern music as well as old skool jazzy stuff.

one big band that I was in played remakes of the current pop songs... we sounded alot better than the actuals in some cases!!!
