String Question....

Ok, I know a bass player who boils his strings instead of buying new ones. It sounds alright and I was wondering if anyone else has tried it and whether if it is worth it to just get new ones.

I tried it a couple times. It livened up the strings and got me through that nights gig but the next day they were deader than they were before I boiled them. Boiling works but for only a short while so, unless you want to constantly boil your strings or your poorer than dirt, I'd just buy new ones.

Also, taking your strings off then putting them back on creates a lot of mechanical stress on the strings. Do it more than once or twice and even boiling won't restore any tone and you could weaken the strings to the point where they might break.

Peace!

That's what I had heard... that boiling weakens your strings. I break strings so often anyway that I can't aford to risk weakening them. I just buy singles until I can get a new set then rotate my string down throung my backup bass and weird basses. I have a few basses that are kinda like specialty basses that I almost never use, but have bc they are neat. Those basses get my old strings.

Yeah, I guess I am... it's beena while, hasn't it? i dunno... you ever get to that point where you totally lose intrest in something? And then you "rediscover" it later? That's me and the internet all the time. I go through stages where I use the internet solely for e-mail and IM and nothing else. But lately I've discovered Morpheus... and if I'm gonna be online long enough to download some songs, I gotta find something to do with that dead time... so I've rediscovered my love for this site!

So, yeah, I guess I am back! For a while at least....
