Question Did Christ go to hell?

Something is greatly puzzling me. I was in a discussion with a friend who thinks that Christ went to hell. That mathew 12:40 says "For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." To me that meant his tomb (which was in the earth because the entrance to the tomb was sealed). Also when christ was on the cross he told the man on the cross "today you will be with me in paradise" If he was going to hell, why would he have said this?. Also Christ took the entire burden of sin, meaning that since he did he may have gone to hell. To me this is greatly confusing. so the question is this. Did Jesus go to hell? Please try and use scripture to support your answer.

Well he decended to some sort of "place"...perhaps a type of purgatory or limbo to preach to those there...alot of people interpret this to be where all the Old Testemant Saints were kept...and he went there to preach and bring them to Heaven with him...now that the gates of heaven were finally open because of his sacrifice!!!

Luke 16.20-25 Lazarus, and the rich man. All are in heaven, but seperated by a gulf. Also see Eccl. 12.6-7,or the "two Bodies" thread.
