5-stringers

hey does anyone here play 5-string bass? i've been eyeing this nice black ibanez 5-string that i've been wanting. I have always played 4-string and have only briefly played a 5-string at a store.. i'm wondering if the transition is hard and what the advangtages of 5-string is.. (drop D is pointless) and is it usually heavy metal used?

IS IT THIS BASS? Ya want it? PM me...

I use my 5th all the time. Not just for metal, I use it for everythign. Jazz, rock, in the church band. Anything.
The transition is not hard at all. Well...I dont think. I learned on a 5. But I can go from guitar to bass no problem. If you can do that, it should be fine, thinks I.

Why is drop D useless?
The 5th is just better if you want to go low, which I do. I find if you use the 4th, I dont miss it, but when I use the 5, I play it lots.

I learned how to play on a 6 string and use drop D all the time. I have always used my 6 string to play everything from bluegrass to hard rock and I love it. I have been thinking about buying a 5 string but am not sure that I ever will. I currnetly play a Cort 6 string, but I am looking at buying a Traben 5 string. Has anyone ever played a Traben at all to let me know if they are any good?

i've never heard of a six string bass... does it have the high B or one lower than that? or is it the same as an electric guitar?

Banjo, stay away from Trabens. I've played a couple and they sound like crap. Not actually bad, just very very bland.

Haha, that's what I meant. I didn't think someone would be naive enough to accept that that was the only way 6 stringers could look...

And it's actually a lot smaller than it looks. Just look at it on somebody... I love the shape. I can get up to the 25th and extended 27th frets very easily. Very unorthodox, but I like it.

5-stringed basses

I am learning on a 4-string bass but have been thinking of at least trying a 5-string, but is it a easy transition? Do you have to learn alot more, or is it all easy stuff that should come naturally. Please help, I have only been playing for a few months and won't see my teacher until Friday to ask him(he plays a 5-string)

It all depends. Do you have small hands? the necks on 5 strings tend to be wider than 4 strings. The main difference between 4 strings and 5 strings is that 5 strings have either a low B or a high C. On alot of 5 strings the low b can be quite floppy. For the most part it all depends on the person if it will be an easy transition or not. Some people will catch onto 5 strings easily and others wont. Personally i think im going to stick to 4's. Its all personal taste.

I do have very small hands, and find it hard to play on some basses anyway. so I guess that answers me question, at least for a while. Thanks alot
