Personally, I just reach for the Vic Firths and pay up so I can get back to rockin' out...but if you like tapping for tone, you could tap the counter instead of your head...and then you could put your ear real close so it makes you look real knowledgeable...
I think some sticks are tone matched and then packaged together. But don't quote me on that one. Some hicks have more teeth than I do IQ points...
I usually buy Vic Firth which are already pitch paired. But to make sure I find an even surface and compare, maybe try them out on a ride cymbal in the store.
On the sanding issue thaat jesusfreak mentioned, I use Peter Erskine signature sticks which are different diameters to achive the same effect as well as different tips for pinpoint articulation on the snare a ride.
Two different sized sticks would seem strange to me.
