Anything over 13 and a half is old around here.

Yes. I know Gwenny was joking. She is actually a couple years older than me.

Art told me he is an undercover Oak Ridge Boys fan.

__________

I find that I like familiar things. I like to read books with characters I am familiar with. I love reading the Star Wars books that fall after Return of the Jedi, but not the Clone Wars stuff. I like reading about the adventures of Dirk Pitt the outrageously dapper NUMA engineer who can seemingly kick MacGyver's tail in a pinch. (Notice the link to MacGyver for the young ones. ) I will reread an old book before I'll pick up a new one 80% of the time. That is part of me.

Then the other part of me that can't stand the 'traditional'. The 'things we have always done'. I like the newness of new. Like the Cambell's commercial: "What's feels different around here?" "It's the new" "I like the newness of new". You know? One thing that hurts my heart more than any is to watch someone cling to the things they know...and fail...because they are scared of the things that are new. I wonder how much more "The new wine will not fit in the old wine skins" (my paraphrase) really means. I'm not just talking about church, but life. I feel I am very proficient in cutting away the dead weight in my life and trying something new, but at the same time, I am hard headed and have a hard time quitting things once I start. Projects, ministries, jobs. I am a contradiction, I think.

The letter for the day is G.

Atony's birthday is this month. Don't forget to wish him well. It's on the 23rd.

Now that is very interesting to me. I cannot re-read a book unless it's been so long since I read it that I can't remember the plot. I don't like to re-watch movies either. There are scenes from movies that I'll watch over and over (i.e. The Princess Bride), but I rarely re-watch a whole movie.

Oh yes - I had nearly forgotten about Nathan's special day. I'll be sure to with him a happy day. *smile*

For some reason, I was thinking you were always offshore. I remember a while back, some network (I think it was Bravo) had a show on called "Black Gold". I hope I got the title right. It followed rig workers around basically. This was all on land. Is that the type of rig you work on? I think they called some of the workers "roughnecks".

Yamaha Silent Guitar.

Although, I guess an electric guitar with a headphone amp would accomplish similar results. It just wouldn't sound as acoustic. I wouldn't mind have one of those Yamaha ones linked above. Although, these are pretty awesome too. At least the made in USA version was, I'm not sure if the Chinese ones are good. They must be okay.

MacGyver could probably build a car out of three paperclips and a piece of string.

Funny story, at dinner Monday night Amy and I tortured our children by singing to them all the songs we thought were cool when we were kids. My son thought it was funny, my daughter was horrified. Here are some of the ones I can remember:

Elvira-Oak Ridge Boys
Super Freak-Rick James
Can't Touch This-MC Hammer
Friends in Low Places-Garth Brooks
The RIght Stuff-New Kids on The Block
Dixie Land Delight-Alabama
Livin' on a Prayer-Bon Jovi
We are the Champions-Queen
Wild Horses-Garth Brooks
Miami My Amy-Kieth Whitley
The Chair-George Strait
Margaritaville-Jimmy Buffet
Louie Louie-Kingsmen

I can't remember the rest of them. Good times.
I'm just wondering how your childhood spanned three decades.

The songs I highlighted are ones I am more familiar with. I am 50. When I was younger I heard a lot of old country stuff. But, as I grew up my tastes would soon form. Rock and roll was the greater influence.

Thanks for the gorilla. I needed one. The one I got last year ate his way out of the cage and ran away.

I don't know why I reread books. I really like series that contain the same characters. I think that is one of the reasons I liked the Left Behind series. There were so many books with new adventures of the same people.

I spend very little time offshore. Most of the work I do is on land rigs. I am not a roughneck, but i work with them. I am a Drilling Fluids Engineer, better known as a Mud Engineer. That show, black gold is representative of how the oilfield was 10-20 years ago. There are very few rigs that operate like 'Rig Dogs' and the like. Most oil rigs today are all computer operated and automated. 12 years ago when I was a mud pup, I worked on rigs like that. Scary and not OSHA approved.

I wouldn't mind a guitar like that. I think all I really need is a good electric to go with my GNX-3 Workstation and a good set of head phones. I'll be working on that.

You know...country music. There are songs recorded three decades ago that are still top 10 on the country charts.
Occasionally when I am driving and there is nothing else to listen to, I'll tune into a country station. They still play the same stuff I listened to with a few new songs peppered in. That is any country station, not just the oldie station. That's how I remember it in high school too. When I found a new favorite song, I had to listen to all the old ones just to hear it once a day.

I was a kicker for so long until Amy introduced me to rock. I would say rock is the greater influence for my playing and singing.

I was also quite a fan of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Merle Haggard.

Even though my musical tastes are much harder now and I enjoy loud rock music (both playing and seeing played live) I do enjoy classic country and bluegrass. It's funny because I actually grew up listening to country as that's all my parents would listen to. To me the old stuff is better than this modern poppy country crap Nashville has been turning out.

I concur Mr. Brave'sfan. I don't enjoy much of the new Country Music. Of course my parents really didn't like Garth Brooks and Shania Twain when I was so into them.

Another taste of mine happens to be the surfer music like the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, Duane Eddy, The Astronauts and the Surfaris. This was a big time push on my Dad's part. He listened to this stuff constantly. I don't listen much anymore, maybe once a year, I'll set up a play list on Rhapsody of Barbara-Ann, Wouldn't it Be Nice, Birds the Word, Wipe out, Surf City and many others. I actually had Beach Boy's records (that would be the big black shiny disks about 10 inches in diameter, played on a record player) that my MOM sold in a garage sale when I moved out of the house.

I also had the Micheal Jackson 'Thriller Album' and 'Beat It'. I was so cool.

Here is another song Amy and I sang to our kids:

Hey Mickey you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey...hey Mickey

and

eight six seven five three oh niiiieyine: Jenny.

Yeah, so guess what? I saw the Beach Boys in concert in August. Jealous much? I thought so.

My dad has all the beach boys albums on vinyl still. He even has a few eight tracks, with an eight track player that still works.

And I have Michael Jackson on my Zune and regularly play it on my way to class on the bus shuttle. I often feel the need to get up and start dancing to beat it or thriller. Yeah.

Hey Donnie, I finally read that big update! Wow. It's good to have you back and I'm glad everything is going well for you. The young adult group sounds awesome, although it is a bit disparaging that I'll no longer be considered a young adult after August 31. Getting old...What's with that? So yeah, I'm in Germany now. I just got some new recording equipment. I think I'll make a post in my blg. Haven't done that in a while! See, Donnie?! You inspired me!
