Songwriting technique

hi everyone

I've been playing a lot of Keith Green stuff recently, and it got me thinking about his songwriting technique... I've just started writing myself, and i find the piano side really difficult (compared to the lyrics).
What i was wondering is (and it's not JUST relating to Keith's stuff, just people who write complex stuff for piano in general): Do you think it's all just in their heads, or would they actually take the time to note some of the particular phrases down? Just playing a few of Keiths today, i was struggling to remember how certain bits go, and i know that he didn't change it every time he played, there was a certain way...

so basically, do you think pianists/keyboarders ever write down what they're composing ??
cos it scares me that i might have to just remember everything (although it would look kinda stupid getting up to play with sheet music).

thanks and God bless
Stuart

Way! another Keith Green fan .

If you listen to Keith Greens' music you'll see that there are certain phrases with appear in many of his songs. These 'fills' aren't something that Keith would have to think about for each song, but would come in naturally when he played [well that's what happens for me . ]

I reckon that if you're writing a song, you'll have a melody in your head. You then take that melody to the piano and figure out the chords to it.

When it comes to recitals you don't need music as you use your ear! You know the melody, and the fancy bits are standard issue which are put in as part of 'you' not the particular piece.

Hope some of that made sense.

Cool writing

Hey, that's cool that you're writing I want to write great music for God . I think that when you think of a melody it would be a good idea to write it down right away or else you might lose it (I would). and then you could write accompianment to it Good luck, great fun
