Standard mostly, then around 25% I'm in drop D for some chordal work that's a bit difficult in standard, and occasionally I drop down one step, usually to be able to play a song with open chords that's a bit more in my singing range then most songs. If I have really heavy strings, I'll have some fun in Drop-A tuning, which is great for a heavy, deep sound (and I'm talkin aobut clean playing. I don't care all too much for ultra heavy distortion, which I can achieve just fine in standard (a la Metallica)). Makes me GASsy for a baritone guitar...

And the Rain Song tuning. When I'm playing The Rain Song.

On electric: Standard and down a half step usually. Drop D occasionally.
Acoustic: Standard, open D, open G, open E, DADGAD, DGDGAD, EABEBE...a few others that just kinda happen (usually with very detuned low strings). I've tried playing with a few of Joni Mitchell's tunings, they're just so weird.

on electric: standard, half-step down, drop d
on acoustic: standard, half-step down, drop d, double drop d, drop c#, crowder A, crowder ab, EABEBe, and this one (C# G# C# Eb G# C) would be my favorite.

I don't mind Drop D and other drop tunings if the player can do more than play just power chords and basicly dumb down the tuning being used. I do think drop tuning have been givin a bad rap because of how they've been used.

I drop my tuning for select songs, but I don't mess around with the relationship between the strings. for example, I'll tune all the strings down starting in D or C just so I can do songs like Hungry...I have a lower voice (for a girl, anyways) and I don't like capoing it up too high, or transposing the chords up too high. I like how it sounds in E, so I just tune down so I can play it with the same chord formations and still manage to sing it decently. and, if a song calls for drop D (I rarely play songs that require it, though) then I'll drop only the D.

my guitar teacher played this piece called Koyumbaba on a guitar that is permanently tuned to Dm. it's awesome. it's playable in standard tuning, but it was written on a guitar tuned to Dm, so it just sounds that much better. some day I want to learn to play songs like that. some day.

read more books! listen to more classical, jazz and world music! play more other stringed instruments!

I also like Drop D because you can get some cool sounds using the low D as a drone string.
