It finally comes out tomorrow. Entertainment Weekly and SputnickMusic both gave it very good reviews. Of course...that doesn't mean much of anything to me.

It's a good six song e.p.

I'll simply say that this is the most thorough disappointment I've encountered from an artist I admired (of any medium) in the past five years. With that, I'll bow out of the discussion.

I need to give it another close listen, but I don't think I'd even give it 6 songs.

It's no Is A Real Boy, by any means. It has a little too more production magic thrown all over it. It's without a doubt a hardcore pop record.

I liked a lot of the production magic actually. It provided some of the stronger moments. However, I didn't find any of the songs to be very strong or stand out to me, and a lot of the songs which I did enjoy it was because of something I liked in the production or some cool backing vocals.

I really fail to see anything special about this band. They're mediocre pop punk at best and really annoying imo.

When you call anything with harsh vocals "screamo", it makes as much sense as calling anything with distorted guitar "heavy metal".

...maybe part of the problem is that you think they're a pop punk band.

What I've heard says so, and Sputnikmusic.com agrees with me.

When I read them refer to them as pop punk I immediately wrote them off as a severely crappy music magazine.

Both the singles from ...Is a Real Boy. That song (I think called "I can get sexual too") seemed gross for no real reason.
Whatever the genre, they just seem severely overrated, like plenty of other bands I see in the mainstream.

That's too bad. There are tons of great reviews on that site. (including mine )

Ok...lets go with this song. You heard "Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too" and thought pop punk? What about that song is pop punk? The songs lacks almost all of the distinctives of pop punk...besides the catchy melody part.

What does the song seeming gross have to do with them being over-rated?

Max Bemis is a wonderful post-modern lyricist to me, as in he doesn't take a stance on what he is saying. Much like Thomas Pynchon (as I think Jeffery has compared him to earlier in the thread), he lays out a story and doesn't try to justify whether it is right or wrong. It's one of the things I enjoy most about the band, actually.

In Defense of the Genre is growing on me very very quickly. The songs I didn't like the first time around are becoming better and better and the songs I liked I now love. I don't want to jump the gun, but it is somewhat possible this could be my album of the year.

I never meant to imply they were related.
