| Not bad. Those songs were fairly enjoyable. I found "Awkward" to be pretty good, actually. I'd like to hear full-band versions before passing judgment. |

| I actually somewhat enjoyed the song...kind of..ish. Did anybody else think the melody in the verse was very, very similar to the Clash's "Rudie Can't Fail"? |

| Not really. At least, not until you said something.

| Yeah, immediately I thought of "Rudie Can't Fail," but also "I Also Fought the Law."
In all honesty, I think I like this new single better than most of the last album (except "Skinny Mean, Man," the one song I really loved off that album).
Max has some clever lines, like "Mother Nature, that green-eyed slut." Obviously, a clever play on envy and the basic shade associated with nature. That whole verse has a great deal of subtext, something that was missing from his lyrics on In Defense of the Genre.
However, the lyrics and the delivery seems a bit forced, and not in a "It's clear he's mocking cynicism" sense. "We Will Erase All Life on Earth But Us" (one of my favorite SA songs) came to mind.
Max seems to be holding back vocally in places. The music is nice overall, but he's retreading ideas both good and bad from his past albums.
The keys and the acoustic guitars in the verses, giving way to the simple electric riff (around "counting stars") was an immediately delicious hook. The gang vocals near the end were perfectly blended with the rest of the song.

| You know, I kind of like the song too, but the lyrics certainly have that air of deja vu to them. Your angry, jaded and cynical. We get it Max.

| I like it. It's not bad. I appreciate how he doesn't try to be super clever with his opening lines, creativity swiftly fading away immediately after, which was so prevalent on the previous album.
I definitely hear a bit of "Rudie Can't Fail" and "I Fought The Law," but I'm not sure I would've noticed on my own. |

| I agree, it feels forced. It seems a little like Max knows what fans expect from him lyrically, but he isn't really that person anymore. He doesn't want to disappoint his fans though, so he's trying to write the songs that he thinks they want, even though they aren't as honest and meaningful as they used to be.
That being said, the song has grown on me a little bit. When I first heard it I considered not buying the album, but I think I will now. More for songs like Cemetery and Ahh, Men though. |
