| general keys question I'm in a couple of bands, one of which needs a keyboardist, because our sound is somewhat empty to my ears (we're an emo/screamo type band.....see: underoath, anberlin, emery, etc.). I know a few good piano players who know enough about this type of music to be able to pick up quick on keys. I know a good bit of theory, and a basic knowledge of keyboard effects playing, so I'm prepared to teach the ropes to whoever ends up playing with us. A few questions I have (theory wise):
In a typical song, would a keyboardist of this genre (say they were playing a straight-forward synth effect), would they play the tonic and 5th of the chord along with the bass note......or the tonic and 5th w/out the bass note.....or a 1-3-5 triad......or octaves......or what? I've recorded a few keys tracks for a couple of acousticrecordings, and I played the tonic and 5th and bass note for each given chord change, but I wasn't sure if this is what you were "supposed" to do...or if it applies differently to different genres of music. It sounded ok to me....
But either way...basically all I'm asking is what the keyboardist plays for a given chord change. Thanks for any help offered.
