Jazz funk

Miles davis electric was totally insaine. I thought it was cool but its definetally insaine.

Herby Hancock and the Head Hunters wasnt bad.

Jazz

Coltrane is great (giant steps, A love supreme, Blue train)

Miles Davis is interesting(Kind of Blue, Standards/ Originals)

Charles Mingus is really cool in "mingus at antibes" but I haven't heard much else

Since this thread has been resurrected, I'll add that I checked out Time Out by Dave Brubeck, and I love this album. It's the first exposure I've ever had to Brubeck, and I highly recommend it to anyone that is interested in piano driven jazz. Beautiful stuff.

I've also been listening to a lot of Frank Zappa's Hot Rats and I really have enjoyed that album. I don't know what that would be categorized as, maybe fusion, but give it a listen, and not just to Peaches en Regalia. To hear how innovative Zappa was, check out Willie the Pimp. Some tight grooves and wild guitar work on that track.

Or good drumming, Morelleo is smoking hot on that album.

Definitly check out The Bad Plus. They do a lot of covers of rock songs but completely jazzed up, like Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" to name just a couple. They're amazingly good.

If you want something modern, fun, and funky; try Drop Trio. You can download legal free live concerts. I suggest the one in Brasil.

Actually, the one at Jakes Sports Cafe is far better as far as actual quality of recording goees.

Downloadeded. Not to bad. Not quite as chopsy as I like my modern, funky stuff, but it's still good nonetheless. Kind of like a less guitar driven Soulive.

Is this your first Zappa record? Probably not, but if you haven't already, check out Roxy and Elsewhere. A really great live Zappa album.

I second the mahavishnu orchestra. John McLaughlin is a legend. Joshua Redman is good for funky jazz stuff. I think flea from the chilli's plays on some of his record(s).

I hate MacLaughlin. OK player, but his music (or lack thereof) I dislike muchly.

Hmm, my favorite instrumental jazz is bebop: Charlie Parker and the Yardbird Suite, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk...

Anything Wes Montgomery. He is quite possibly the most influencial and creative jazz guitarist there ever was.

I would suggest some Miles, but if you are into more complicated stuff check out some later ellington or Count Bassie.

If you're a guitar guy, you should check out Al Dimeola. "Fusion" might be a better description. But if you like jazz guitar you shouldn't miss Al. That 'Saturday Night in San Francisco' CD will take your breath away.
