Psalm 90:1 - God's Everlasting Care

Hi everyone!
Psalm 90 has been my favorite Psalm for a long time; it is the only Psalm written by Moses; since we have a record of Moses' life and walk with God, I find it fascinating that we can read some of Moses' own thoughts on His relationship with God.

Psalm 90:1 (NLT) - "Lord, through all the generations you have been our home!"

From the first time I read that verse, I was amazed. This one verse tells us so much about God. Think for a moment about Moses. He was rescued from the Nile River by Pharoah's daughter; he was then raised as her son, completely protected from the infanticide that was ravaging the Hebrew slaves. As Moses grew up, the Bible tells us that he murdered an Egyptian and fled into the desert; for 40 years, he tended sheep and probably questioned the purpose and meaning of his life.

Now, when he writes this Psalm, Moses is probably looking back at all he has done since then. God came to Him in a burning bush, commissioning him for a job that he could not accomplish on his own. With God's power, he boldly proclaimed judgment on Pharoah, the most powerful man alive at the time. With God's power, he was able to part the Red Sea and enable the Israelites to escape the clutches of their Egyptian taskmasters. Later, God gave him the Ten Commandments and showed him a glimpse of His glory on the mountain. Through constant grumblings and complaining by the people, the Lord remained merciful and promised to bless Moses. Although he could not enter in, he eventually was even able to behold the land to which God was taking his people.

This is just a short summary of Moses' life; I encourage you to read the book of Exodus to grasp a little better all the Moses experienced. The point of this short devotional is that Moses realized, quite simply, that God had been with Him his whole life. Even those times when he felt useless, forgotten, and broken, the Lord was his "home." He reflected on how God had, in fact, had ALWAYS been there for His people. In every generation that had ever lived, God had never once proved unfaithful. Moses was able to see God's hand and providence in His own life, as well as in others.

I believe one of the reasons he was called "the friend of God" was because of this amazing trust in the everlasting care of God. Right before his death, Moses reminded the people of this very thing in Deuteronomy 33:27 (NLT) - "The eternal God is your refuge, and his everlasting arms are under you."

Therefore, in our lives, we can trust God to take care of us. He won't "drop the ball," and I don't have to worry about Him somehow forgetting about me or failing to provide my every need. Why? He has been His people's dwelling place, their home, their trust, their provision... in ALL generations. He's not about to start doing a bad job now.

God bless!
