Crate amps

Ok, I really like these two amps, but I was wondering if any of you had used them or know what they sound like because they look awesome.

Which of these would you recommend? Are these any good?

I'm not sure about the second one but at a local gig soon i'm using a Crate head with a custom cab, (our lead player built) and it sounds great. It's probably a lot better quality though then a half stack (head and cab) for only $500.

I hate everything Crate...... 9 times out of 10, you get what you pay for, and its true with Crate. You don't need a half stack if you're not willing to pay for a real one. A nice tube combo will be absolutely fine. I'll admit, even I don't need my 100 watt power amp and 4x12 rig. But I spent a lot of money on it to make sure it's quality. But I could easily get enough volume out of a 2x12 or even a 1x12 tube combo miked.

Crate amps are the biggest pieces of junk known to man. Not at all worth the money.

Again. Solid-State Crappage. Marshall's a good name, and if you've played it, and liked it, go for it. I don't know if this counts as snob tubery because you're not going for any modeling-stuff. Tell us what sound(s) you're going for.

Ugh, I don't like the Marshall MG series either. It's a step up from Crate for sure, but still not that great. Look for something thats all tube. What kinda sound are you looking for?

I mainly play hard rock, but with clean stuff thrown in. Can you get a tube amp for around 500 dollars?

Yes you can. I believe you could find a Peavy Classic 30 in that price range. I would think that it would do very well for those styles.

New or used? Also, would it be better to look at used tube amps or just look at new ones?

well what i did was to do some research and pick a few amps out, then go play them. It helps to have a good handle on what your wanting in an amp before walking into a music store. Most stores will let you try stuff out, and make reccomendations about a good amp.

If you want (and have the $$$) you could buy new, or you could just check out ebay or local people selling the amp you like. Good luck.

I have a peavey classic 30. I play hard rock, emo, pop-punk, blues and it sounds perfect for everything. Great amp, and right in your price range.

I 2nd the Classic 30. I have one w/an attenuator from Major Tom (PM him if you want to know more), and it is awesome. It's very versatile.

The first part, great advice. The second part, be careful and think about where you are first before taking advice from a store employee. In other words, don't go to Guitar Center or another big chain store looking for advice unless they've proven themselves knowledgeable before. 9/10, they don't know jack. With that being said, GC is a great place to try out stuff before buying.
