If you are a CGRer, a hymn-lover, a musician, or a marginally-intelligent person, you need to visit Benj's blog. He inspires me with his rants and raves, but mostly with his music. He's got quite a few really really nice tunes up at that blog. You'll have to go back a few pages to find some of them, but it will be worth it. CGR has known some great people throughout the years.
In His love,
Nate

| My mom ordered me an entire IceHouse set (IceTowers box-set for the Cyan pieces, plus six stashes of pieces in the colors that aren't in the IceTowers set... total of 10 colors) for my birthday. I've been looking at it for a little while now and it looks really cool. Basically, it's a gaming system (like a deck of playing cards, or a pair of dice, or a chessboard, or anything else that is used in multiple games) that consists of five each of three sizes of stackable and nestable plastic pyramids in various colors. There are something like 100 known games that have been invented for it so far. A lot of the games sounded really interesting to me; many are logic / strategy games, some are twists on classic board games, and quite a few are real-time games (which I've never heard of before, but it sounds cool). Most of the games use nothing except the pieces themselves. I think it's going to be fun. I've always liked abstract / thinking games, and games in general; this should be coolness.
In His love,
Nate

The best prices I found were here, but it still came to like $70 for everything after shipping. Luckily, you only need about four sets (which would be $30 after shipping at that site, approximately) to play most of the games... and some only require one set per player. I was only going to order the box-set and two additional colors (which would be enough to play "Volcano," seemingly one of the more popular games), but my mom told me that I should have all the colors and told me to add them all to the cart. Haha.
In His love,
Nate

| For your sampling pleasure, here are some of the games that both seemed popular and intrigued me: Brances, Twigs, and Thorns The Original IceHouse IceTowers Martian Backgammon Töframenn Volcano
If you actually take the time to look at a few of those, you'll see just the variety of different types of games that these pieces allow you to play. All the different characteristics (shape, position, size, color, nesting/stacking ability, etc) of the pieces combine to make a very varied set of possibilities for gaming. It's unlike most games where the pieces / parts really only do one thing (how many truly different things can you do with a deck of cards or a set of dominoes, after all?); the possibilities for play really seem endless. I'm looking at a site right now about building a board for the Volcano game, but the guy realized that his design allowed him to make the board itself stackable so he thought he might come up with a game using that feature.
Cool stuff.
In His love,
Nate

I'll be sure to let you all know if any of my body parts mysteriously go numb whilst enjoying birthday beverages.

| Due to liberal use of the new smiley, I think we should limit all other users (besides Nate) to one usage per week.
