Peter, Peter, What are you doing?

I'm looking for tab for a song for which I don't know the Artist or the Title.
The lyrics in the verses start out something like this:

Peter, Peter what are you doing following that man...

And the chorus goes:

Did you ever think how life could be if you were still at sea. You would be a fishing man, Oh Peter you're such a fool.

We sang that song at church camp back in the early eighties but I don't know anything more about it. Can anyone help?

Peter, Peter, What Are You Doing

I don't know the author of this song, but here are the lyrics.
Guitar chords are A, C#m, D, A, D, E, A

Verse 1
Peter, Peter, what are you doing following that man?
You gave up your life of fishing, will it really last?

Refrain: Ah, you think about the way things might have been, if you'd remained at sea.
You'd still be a fisherman. Peter, you're such a fool.

Verse 2
Peter, Peter, what are you doing slipping in the waves?
You thought you'd walk across the water, now you're sinking down.

Verse 3
Peter, Peter, what are you doing standing by the fire?
You told them you didn't know Him, now He's gone and died.

Verse 4
Peter, Peter, what are you doing hanging upside down?
Peter, Peter you know you're dying, dying for your Lord.

On final Refrain add:
How I'd like to be such a fool!

GARY WRIGHT

I am pretty certain a fella named Gary Wright wrote Peter Peter.. He came to my town, of Harrisburg IL and sang at a Men in the Heartland conference thing.. I learned the song and sang it with guitar accompanist in 1997 i think, and later learned guitar myself and figured it out and used to play it in church all the time.. Its one of the best songs i know of, and nobody knows about it!

We were singing this in the mid 70's, so I know it is at least that old...

Great song and easy to play...

Smile Peter, Peter

I was taught this song in the late 70's at Juniata College in central PA. It looks like it really got around. Thanks to those who provided the guitar chords. I had the lyrics written down but didn't have the chords. I wonder if I can play it again... What a message!

Who recorded this song? I remember one version was a duet by a husband and wife I believe. The 'album' was blue and purple faded into each other. I love that song and would have expected it to have been redone by now.

A friend of my dad's back in Texas wrote this in the early 70's. My brother had learned the version that's been posted above at a camp in the 90's in PA, and came back playing it. When my dad heard it, he said "Matt, you are playing the Peter Song...but you're playing it all wrong! And he took the guitar and played for us the original. The melody and lyrics are a little different in the original.

My dad passed away 10 years ago, and I can't remember who he said the friend's name was, but I've since come to like the original even better. I think the lyrics in the original make more sense (it's written from the perspective of the world looking at Peter's faith and thinking his faith is foolish, when really the world's perspective is upside down, which the narrator realizes in the last line of the song). If anyone is interested in hearing the original version, I've attached an mp3.

The original lyrics:

Peter, Peter on the water, you're a funny sight
Peter, don't realize that you could drown tonight?
Just think about how things might have been
if you'd remained at sea
You'd still be a fisherman and have security
but now you're treading water with your toes
And to everyone who knows, you look like a fool

Peter, peter see the cripple holding out his cup
Peter don't you be so foolish as to say stand up
Just think about how things might have been
if you'd remained at sea
You'd still be a fisherman and have security
but now you're acting like a miracle man
fitting in to a joker's masterplan;
Peter, what a fool.

Peter, Peter what are you doing
You're hanging upside down?
Peter don't you realize that you're giving up you're life
for someone else's crown?
Just think about how things might have been
if you'd remained at sea
You'd still be a fisherman and have security
But now you've nothing left at all to show,
and the world's just gonna let you go,
Peter, you're a fool.

Oh, to be such a fool....
