you're...
lost in october, caught
in a web of jack-o-lanterns and
goblins, scavenging the town for
a midnight snack.
found yourself in november,
stuffed in the turkey, stepping in
cranberry sauce & green bean
casserole, looking for the end.
died in december, old and used,
buried six feet under, sleeping
with a tombstone for a headboard.
a moment of silence in january,
millions of tiny crystals blanket your
grave & everything is either dead or
dying, following you on your pursuit.
a period of mo[u]rning in february, but
the darkness still outweighs the light,
faded like the slush consuming the
high & byways & rivers & bridges.
a jolt runs through your march body,
the sensation of falling in your dreams,
almost waking up like the melting snow
and budding leaves, soon a regeneration
of trees.
the fool is you on the first of april,
as your eyes open from the cold rain
drip drip dripping into your skin
and roots from the oak tree a few
feet away, jabbing at your ribs.
then may is tap tap tapping while the
birds sing early in the morning. you rub
your eyes and burst through the earth
like a weed through rocks, roots digging
deep and choking everyone else.
but along with the june heat and weed
killer you wither, but rise again as a
blossoming tree, dropping apples for
less fortunate friends.
you're happy in july, a fish in the water,
and a dog in the air conditioning. there
are only so many days you can sit in front
of the driveway selling lemonade for
twenty-five cents.
the august sunshine breeze warns you,
our time to bask in the summer sun is waning,
the leaves will begin to show their age, and
mommy's will go to k-mart to purchase pens,
pencils, crayons and construction paper.
you're imprisoned in a september cell,
endless institution staring in your face.
the chalk against the board ceases to
make any sense at all, finding yourself
lost in october...
