Copycat Christian?

What do you guys think about the idea that Christian bands are copycatish of some secular stuff? Only one I've really heard is that Skillet has a few songs that sounded like Linkin Park, Three Doors Down and Nine Inch Nails. What's your guy's take on this subject? Do you think there are Christian bands who copy the mainstream stuff?

I think its horrible.......but Skillet is by no means a copy cat band. One of their CDs showed a good amount of NIN and Marilyn Manson influence. Claims that they sound like either Linkin Park or Three Doors Down are rather silly.

Heya,

Of course it's horrible. It's horrible for any band to copy another band.

Good example of a Christian Copy-Cat band: Kutless. Terrible stuff.

Guess what? Most bands copy each other. Vary few are original. It affects the secular market just as much as it does the Christian.

I don't know how many of these bands set out to blatantly copy secular bands. But a lot of christian bands are definitely marketed as copies.
for some reason it is also seen as a good thing.

There is a world of difference between "copying off of" a band and being influenced by a band.

Any band, Christian or otherwise, that does the former should be shot. Nearly all bands, Christian or otherwise, do the latter, often without consciously thinking about it.

It's also kind of hard not to do that, too.

There's no reason why we should support Christian bands that are out to copy a secular band, and are marketed as a "If you like *insert secular band*, then check out..." kind of band.

i think the christian market is 'reactionary', as in, a band like linkin park comes out. The clock is now ticking. someone from some christian label signs, records and markets a band just like their secular counterpart to 'ride the wave' of the current trend. thats why the christian market dosnt react until 3-4 sometimes as long as 6 months later with similar bands. saw it with ska, swing, DMB/john mayer, insert genre HERE________ etc etc etc.

this is why i cannot listen to 98% of christian music. especially anything that is not on tooth and nail.

Fortunately, the copycat bands that are "reactionary" don't make up nearly as much of the Christian music universe as you seem to think. There are TONS of artists out there who are making creative and original music, it's just more difficult to find them because they rarely "make it big".

Nate

Thats an absurdly high percentage. I imagine you are both highly exagerating and judgin "christian music" based on the "christian music mainstream."

old school christian rock, yes... that is most of the music i listen to. not much that is new that is coming out is worth listening to, some of it is really good though. dead poetic bieng one of them, anberlin another, and i need to check into underoath a bit more too.

nobody can beat the old school tho (i know, not too old, but this IS 90s stuff and i was a teenager in the 90s... dont "petra" me old folks!) .. stavesacre, blindside, project 86, starflyer 59, ZAO, prayer chain, mortal, living sacrifice, juliana theory, POD (from the brown album up.., FEOST was my fave tho)... etc etc etc etc.. (plankeye, grammatrain, you get the picture..)

i mostly listen to secular music, although 2% of the new bands coming up in the christian market are incredible, and have my attention... i cannot bring myself to listen to ANYTHING on stations like KLOVE... I cannot bash them for praising God, I think that is what is important and not my opinion... but their music is utter drivel..
