special chords

Ok one of the things that I'm sick of is stumbling onto a chord in a song thatI have no idea how it goes and I can't find out how to play it anywhere. It's always a slash chord. You know something like Bb/E or C#/D or Bb/Eb or just a lot of em. Is there any website that has every single specail chord listed? Cuz I can sure use it.

Not that I'm aware of. But / chords aren't usually hard to figure out. Before the / is the chord, after the / is the bass note that you have to add. Take, for instance, a D.

xx0232

Now, you can play a D/F# by putting your thumb on the E string on the 2nd fret, like so:

2x0232, or 200232 since it's easier

So, if you know anything about where notes are placed on the fret board, you can figure any of them out.

Sometimes I do it like this: 4xx454

But mostly only if I'm fingerpicking.

For that voicing I have been using my homemade cut capo.

No. In fact, NO, NO, NO.

This is the most common misunderstanding with these kinds of chords. It's chord/bass note, not root note. There is an important distinction to make between the two: the bass note is simply an add-on note that facilitates a modulation, harmonizes, or acts as a walking bass-line along side the chord. The root note, on the other hand, is an important, vital aspect of the chord. It's the note that the chord itself is based upon. So in a D/F#, D is the root note, but F# is the bass note.

Got it? Good.

Excellent distinction.

Try 476454 - it's the C-shape, barred at the 4th fret. There are so many ways to voice a chord, just see what sounds best.

Phew, I'm glad someone pointed that out... I was gettin' worried. Drives me crazy when people DON'T distinguish, or don't know to distinguish between bass and ROOT.

Anyways... E/G#, eh? How about:

4x2450

xx6450
