| The Day The Earth Stood Still I've watched the movie The Day The Earth Stood Still probably ten times. The most recent time I watched it, however, something was different.
Klaatu, the protagonist, comes to Earth from another place. The place he's from has no war, no poverty, no sickness. Upon landing, Klaatu is shot by the military while attempting to produce a gift for the US President. He's taken to a military hospital.
Klaatu decides to go incognito as an earthling, so he can get a clear idea of how Earth society works and how earthlings think and feel. He "borrows" the suit of a Col. Carpenter the hospital, adopts the name Carpenter, and takes a room at a boarding house. Over the next several days, he befriends a boy named Billy, gives the kid diamonds, (his planet's currency), in exchange for a few dollars, explains scientific methods to Billy that the boy cannot fathom, shows a scientist where he has erred in a formula he's been working on for months, and stops all electrical and mechanical power on earth for 30 minutes, to prove to Earth's scientists that he is for real.
The authorities don't understand Klaatu, and fear him. He has tried to get the world powers to meet with him, but they all refuse, offering various excuses. He turns to the scientific community instead. As he is about to address a council of scientific minds from all over the world, the military and governmental forces close in on him, and kill him. He has previously told Billy's mother, whom he has befriended, how to activate his gigantic robot bodyguard, should anything happen to him. His body is placed in a jail cell, and guards are placed around the cell, in case anyone should attempt to move his body. Billy's mother rouses the sleeping giant, who breaks into the jail, disables the guards, and takes Klaatu back to his ship. Inside, Klaatu is revived by his own technology, and tells Billy's mother that it's only temporary, that he must leave, and that none of us knows how long we have to live.
Klaatu leaves Earth with a final message of hope, peace, and warning.
Two millenia ago, God's Son, Jesus Christ came to earth bringing us a message of peace, hope, and warning. He showed us great and astounding things, and explained processes and performed phenomena that we humans could not begin to fathom. He became a carpenter, following in his step-father's footsteps, and lived among mankind, experiencing every feeling and emotion we have firsthand. He was tempted as we are, yet without sin. He tried to warn mankind of impending disaster. He gave gifts and took meager items and did great things with them. But the political and religious powers of His day didn't understand Him, and feared Him. They killed Him. They placed guards around his grave, lest His body be stolen. He was raised to life again in three days by His own power. His time on Earth following His resurrection would be temporary, but before He returned to His Father, He left us with a final message of hope, peace, and warning. If we would but heed His instructions, how much better a place the world would be.
