Normal Crybaby?

I love the wah on my POD floorboard. Nice long travel, easy to pick a specific sweet spot and sit on it, kind of continuum of sound from full up to full down.

I definitely do not love the Dunlop 'Original Crybaby' I scored on Ebay a few weeks ago. When on, it boosts my signal significantly. The tone is harsh, it's got a short travel, and there are 'hot spots' that create a very unpleasant tone. Is this normal for that unit?

Yes. It's normal. That's why I love it.

I use a Cry Baby and a Mister Super Cry Baby. I used to use a Dunlop Hendrix Fuzz Wah, and it performed similarly. They all sound this way. Your unit is no exception.

I think it's just the nature of the thing...though there are a few things you can do to get rid of the volume boost and smooth out the response. I'll get you a link a little later. One thing I found that helped lots was to run a compressor after the wah.

I like the volume boost. It helps for solos. But yeah, thats a crybaby for ya. If you want a smoother sounding wah, check out Vox. They sound wonderful. Morley wahs tend to have more sweep that you might be accustomed to with your POD. I used to use a POD for a while and got used to that nice, long sweep. But ever since I stopped using it and started using a real wah, I had to get accustomed to the shorter sweep.

Ugh! I thought my Crybaby just sucked, because it sounds just like he described. I like the smooth, creamy sweep of the Vox wah way better.

I can't speak for the differences between the Crybaby and the Vox, but that huge volume boost pretty much ruins the whole wah thing for me. Its cool for solos, but blows chunks for wacka-wacka rhythm stuff. for that reason, I like the wah on my RP2000 - it has a nice wah-like quality to the wah, plenty good for a very casual wah user, and doesn't have that huge boost. Wacka-wacka rork-rork.

I suppose you could mod the pedal with a little trim pot to set the wah volume - might be some available on the 'net. Check with Indyguitarist.

Good call. My CS-3 helps a bunch. It still boosts, and it still honks, but it's not nearly as grating as before.

Thanks!
