Is there a better Christian love song and/or ballad writer than Derek Webb???

After getting Caedmon's Call's 40 Acres on Memorial Day and listening to "Somewhere North Of Here", I am officially convinced that Derek Webb is the best Christian love song and/or ballad writer ever.... almost to the point where I think I would like to have "Somewhere North Of Here" played at my wedding even though it wouldn't make the slightest bit of sense.

Anyone care to prove me wrong? Is there a better "Christian love song" (by this, I basically mean a love song written by a Christian songwriter) out there?

Other great songs of Derek's that (I think) fall into the category of love song and/or ballad (not necessarily both at once, though) include "Just Don't Want Coffee" and "Center Aisle" from the album Caedmon's Call.

In His love,
Nate

Well, this is a different question than what the subject asks. I don't know if I'd answer this in the affirmative. "Somewhere North," is, IMO, Derek Webb at his finest. Examining his entire catalog, though, is something different. I think I might give the nod to Matt Slocum, from Sixpence. I also don't know if I can characterize most of what Sixpence did as "ballads." That category, I might give back to D. Webb.

Pierce Pettis is incredible, too.

Seriously, those who haven't heard his music before, you really, really should go out and find his State of Grace CD. It is phenomenal. It's on sale at Grassroots Music for $10 right now, and you can listen to clips from the CD here. Go now Listen to the clip from "Georgia Moon".

10 bucks?? Excellent. Everyone obey Aaron. Not only can he ban you if you don't, but he is also giving you good advice. Choose life.

Oh, and Derek Webb is good, but I think I prefer Pettis' stuff a bit more, frankly.

Steve Hindalong wrote/writes good love songs, although they are nowhere stylistically near ballads.

Hmmm.... interesting replies. I am aware of Steve Hindalong (although I'm not familiar with his older works), I've never really been much of a fan of Sixpence, and I've never heard of Pettis. I will look into all three further.

Nate

C'mon now, we all know that Michael Sweet wrote the best love ballads.

I haven't yet had a chance to buy their CD, but I just discovered the Innocence Mission. The songwriting is quite good, and the vocalist's voice is amazing. Amazon has some legal mp3s available here. I highly recommend "Where Does the Time Go?".

I just got this CD the other day from a Borders (they have a much better music selection than Barnes & Noble, by the way) near me. I am very much liking it, but I think I still prefer Derek Webb's style

Then again, from what I've heard of Pettis so far, comparing him to Derek Webb is like comparing coffee to chai tea... they're both great.

In His love,
Nate

Bebo Norman. Evidence: "Long Way Home" and "A Page Is Turned."

Aaron Sprinkle... although he borders more on folky pop.

I have seen Derek Webb play many times and I would have to say that he is my personal favorite too.
