My friend keeps talking about this guy... Erroneous Iranius he calls him. He says he had a big part in the canonization of the gospels, but that he basically chose them haphazardly and threw disciples names onto them with no idea of who wrote them.

Did your friend, perchance, mean St. Irenaeus of Lyons? If so, from what I've heard of him, he was very orthodox and a very smart man..this is the Catholic encyclopedia's article on him. http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08130b.htm
