Euh, I used one bob jones book before we knew what it was...he has a tremendous anger and hatred toward Catholics...as someone who is Catholic and pretty well read on catholic theology, most of what he says is false. A bekka is a little better, though their history material is still horrible. My sister did BJ French, and basically it was a "let's witness to these horrible french catholics" book...all the vocab seemed to pertain to evangelizing rather than to actual things that you might need were you to actually go to Paris.
My advice to your family would be to try and find a relatively unbiased text selection--there ARE some out there (though they're hard to find), especially in subjects like History and such.
I used Saxon Math, and it worked good for me until I hit upper level math (Algebra 2 to Advanced Mathematics). Then I started to have major comprehension problems, but despite that, I am getting an A out of AP Calculus this year
