Thumbs up Fishing!

Does anyone here really enjoy fishing? There are two creeks by my house and I like to fish there for Trout, Walleye, Catfish, Suckers, Carp, and sometimes bass. I also like to catch crayfish (they make good bait )

I've got about an acre and a half pond that has catfish, bass, and "perch." But we had to restock like a year or two ago so the fish aren't monsters yet, although we did put three 5+ pound largemouth in. But one problem w/the pond though is every summer it gets runover w/ something called millfoil which is like a freshwater seaweed, I wish I knew a way to get rid of it.

boogeray, you noodle? I've never done it and I don't know much about it, how exactly do you convince a catfish to bite your hand?

hey shane ... yeah i usta noodle ... i started in 1968 when i was 12 & the summer of 1994 was my last

when cafish spawn they get under a rock or a concrete slab & make a nest, cleaning out all the soft mud ... the male & the female both go in the nest but as soon as the female lays the eggs she leaves & it is all up to the male ... he first fertilizes the eggs & then protects the nest until they hatch, he may hang around for a day or two after they hatch

of course if you find a nest where the female hasn't laid the eggs yet, you get two fish ... some males will try to run, so you must search for other entrances to the nest & place rocks in them or maybe your fishin buddies feet so they can't get out ... other males will fight for all they are worth & that makes them easier to catch cuz they try to swallow your hand

during the last part of may thru the first of july, most boat ramps have catfish under them that big enuf to make most folks eyes bulge out & they are unloading their boats right over them & don't even know it

my best night ever, me and a friend of mine caught 8 fish that weighed 158# ... the four biggest went a total of 120# ... we caught these fish in an hour & a half time we got home about 1:30 a.m. & were just gettin thru cleanin fish when the sun was coming up

word of caution though, here in texas it is very illegal ... although in oklahoma, louisiana & several other states it is not illegal

Dude, don't worry I wasn't plannin' on tryin' it! When you're not using your phalanges to catch whiskers, what's your favorite bait? I usta use chicken livers but I realized they're just to frggin' messy. And how do you catch the perch? I guess I'm just not as spoiled as you are, (), cuz when I go perch fishin' I do it partly to keep the numbers in my tank (oops, I mean pond) down and partly to eat. Perch are delicious!

When catch carp what are you usin'? I think carp fishing is WAY to underestimated. I haven't caught to many but from what I've seen they might be pound 4 pound the hardest fightin' fish out there. But I haven't gotten up the guts to eat one yet.

(P.S. Boogeray I just looked @ where you live. You're like a stone's throw away from me I'm in Abilene! We oughta go fishin' sometime )

(me)for all around bait i like shad best ... i usually use a small piece of redworm on a #10 cricket hook for perch, bout a year ago i tried some "power wigglers" made by berkley ... they are artificial maggots that have some kind of scent built & they work real good ... i use'um on the same hook i used with the redworms

hey i like perch to eat ... if i catch several bigguns while gettin bait, i eat'um ... yea & they are tasty

(shane)(P.S. Boogeray I just looked @ where you live. You're like a stone's throw away from me I'm in Abilene! We oughta go fishin' sometime )

(me)yeah we ain't far from each other ... i'm over there at least once a week if not more ... where do you fish, besides the tank?

i know you asked baseballboy about carp bait ... i usually just mix up some dough out of floor ... mix in a lil banana & maple syrup & some cottoc seed meal (if you can find some, feed store usually has it) ... make it pretty thick & stiff, use it on a #8 treble hook & hang on

sometimes i fish for carp & buffalo ... i take a ballpeen hammer & whack'um tween the eyes, then scrape the scales off with a big kitchen spoon ... then with an electric knife, fillet the meat off of both sides, with the skin on ... then cut the fillets in one inch square pieces & freeze them in quart freezer bags for trotline bait or rod & reel too ... the skin left on helps it stay on the hook better

I don't go anywhere else that often. I live like 5 miles from Nelson Park so I go there if I just need to satisfy the urge, Ft. Phantom ain't bad, I've been to Brownwood and loved it, Lake Kirby sometimes, Griffith Lake (it's a couple of small lakes inside the city limits w/about every species of fish imagineable, that's where I catch my carp), and I've also tried a beautiful little river called the San Saba river that I liked

Never heard of that, I just made lil' balls of bread and peanut butter.

bread & peanut butter works good too

buffalo & drum are two different fish ... a buffalo looks a lot like a carp except the body is wider & thicker & kind of a gray color

I usually just use night crallers. I never make my own bait, I just find it. There are a hundreds of crayfish in the creeks near my house, and I find worms in my yard.

I've never tried eating carp, I've heard they taste terrible. I just give them to our cats. We have a lot of farm cats that hang around the house.

Carp do not taste terrible, if done correctly. If they are smoked, they are actually quite delicious. If you are going to try and eat them filleted like a "normal" fish, you better make sure you cut out the blood line first, or you'll end up with a hunk of meat that tastes like mud. lol Even if you fillet hem, take out the blood line and then pan-fry, the taste will still be good. The worst part is the feel. It may taste like fish, but if it feels like mashed potatoes in your mouth, it's still not a good thing. The only way I've ever overcome the mashed potatoes syndrome is to smok'em.

By the way, in case any one is interested (I doubt it) the top three tasting fish in my area are:

1) Walleye
2) Bluegills
3) Crappies

Just my $.02

Walleye aren't very common around here. They're very small and stocked thin in a couple of lakes around here.

I've also heard of making carp into fried patties like salmon.
