Biblical fiction/nonfiction

Got an idea and an not sure if it is a good one or not.

I was reading about Abraham the other day and realized just how much of a guy he really was. Here's what I was wondering. What if I took the story of Abrahan and turned in into a kinda third person story. Say you were playing "fly on the wall" and heard all of Abrahams conversations?

Initailly I thought it was great until I really started thinking. In order to make to story flow right I'd have to add facts that the Bible doesn't provide, that's my problem. I don't want to add anything to the Bible, so there inlays my problem. Any input?

Talking Re: Biblical fiction/nonfiction

Let me get this straight..... you want to write a "fictional" story based on the story of Abraham????? Adding stuff to the story found in Genesis for dramatic and clarification purposes???? Is that about right??? Ok.... here's my advice...... GO FOR IT!

I don't see any problem with doing that. As long as you keep in mind that what you're adding ISN'T "fact" but rather assumptions that clarify and add more substance to the account given in Genesis. Check out what you said here....

You said you'd have to "add facts"......... WRONG!!! If you're gonna look at it that way.... stop right now and don't think about it again. You're not gonna be adding "facts"...... you're gonna be adding ideas and assumptions that (hopefully) can be implied from Scripture. In some cases, you'll even have to add things that aren't hinted at in Scripture. But..... as long as you don't treat these additions as Scripture..... or "advertise" them as such....... I see no problem. Just make sure that whoever would read this story KNOWS that it is a partially fictional work BASED on the Biblical account of Abraham. That's how I would go about it.

Oh, and one more piece of advice...... don't add too much!!! Don't do like Tim LaHaye (is that his name?) did with Left Behind............. c'mon...... 10+ full-size novels coming out of the fairly small 22-chapter book of Revelation...... it just doesn't add up. Anyway... there's my advice, take it or leave it.

if the Bible says "Ruth put food on the table" or something, it doesn't say WHAT. However, a fly on the wall would be able to testify that it was an aromatic loaf of spice bread and and savory lamb with clear sparkling water that she had gently put forth for her most gracious guest. You see, the Bible can provide a root, the stable ground, you make the branches that people can see.

It is okay to take part of the Bible, and put in your own interpretations, and make it seem lifelike, as if you were truly there. If you are still nervous about it, at the beginning of the story, have a little intro that says "This is the author's interpretation of this part of the Bible."

Hope that helps!

It may be better to note that it's "historical fiction" (although even that term is not quite accurate", a far cry from outright fiction.

Historical drama would actually be better. I don't know what the equivelant in writing is called, however.
